  1. Was Peter The First Pope?

  2. Matthew 16:13-19 • Pope? • “keys of the kingdom of heaven” • Keys connected with Binding & Loosing in Matthew 18:18

  3. Matthew 18:18 • To ALL of the Apostles! • "Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” • Peter Shared the “Keys” with the Other Apostles, just as he shared the “Binding & Loosing” Authority

  4. No Similarities Between Peter & The Pope

  5. “Virginal Chastity” Imposed on Popes • “It is for a virginally pure priesthood to offer the all-pure sacrifice of the virginal body of Christ” {Sac. Of the Mass, pp282f} • “Christian inscriptions from the 4th century on, mention is made of virginity dedicated to God.” {Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. III, p.240}

  6. “Virginal Chastity” Imposed on Popes • Apostasy well in bloom by the 4th Century • Council of Trent, 1545 AD, formal Canon (10) drafted that made it a sin to be married & serve as a priest.

  7. Peter a Married Man • Mark 1:30 “But Simon's wife's mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once.” • 1 Corinthians 9:5 “right to take along a believing wife, as….Cephas?” {John 1:42}

  8. Pope Demands Homage & Praise • “Kissing of the pope’s foot – characteristic act of reverence.. Honor him as the vicar of Christ… as early as the 8th century.” {Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. 12, p. 270} • Kissing of the pope’s ring

  9. Peter Refused Homage • Acts 10:25-26 “As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, "Stand up; I myself am also a man." • Can you envision the POPE telling the same thing when they bow to kiss his FOOT?

  10. Pope Demands Subjects Called Roman Catholics • 4th Century, Nicene Creed declared Catholic / Universal • Name “Catholic” worn by communicants • 1054 “Roman Catholics”

  11. Peter Taught to wear the name Christian • 1 Peter 4:16 “Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.” • NOT “Catholic Christian” • Just “Christian”

  12. Pope Claims Infallibility “Ex Cathedra” • Declared in 1870 • Gregory I, The Great – 590-604 • Originally, only the council of prelates was considered infallible. • Pope declared Infallible whenever he spoke “from the chair.”

  13. Peter Spoke by Inspiration of the Holy Spirit • Didn’t have to be sitting a “Chair” to do it! • 2 Peter 1:21 “moved by the Holy Spirit.” • John 16:13 “He will guide you into all truth…. He will tell you things to come.” • Galatians 2:11-13

  14. Pope Claimed to Head of Church on Earth • “Receive the tiara adorned with three crowns, & know that thou art the Father of Princes & Kings, Ruler of the World, the Vicar of our Saviour Jesus Christ…” {National Catholic Almanac} • “..the head of the entire church, the father & teacher of all Christians.” {N.Y. Catechism}

  15. Peter Taught that Christ was the Head of the Church • Acts 2:29-36 “… this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.“ • Ephesians 1:22,23 “game Him to head over all things to the church…” • Colossians 1:18 “preeminence”

  16. Pope Wears Names for Honor of Men • 607 – Boniface III, “Universal Bishop” • 642-649 – Theodore I, first “Sovereign Pontiff” • 1198-1216 – Innocent III, “Vicar of Christ” • 1277-1280 – Nicolas III, “Vicar of God”

  17. Pope Wears Names for Honor of Men • Pope: “He is addressed: His Holiness the Pope. By title & right he is: Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of St. Peter, the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff, Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Archbishop & Metropolitan of the Roman province, & Sovereign of the State of Vatican City.” {Concise Cath. Ency. p. 275}

  18. Peter Never Wore Such Names! • Matthew 23:9 "Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.” • Peter would never allow anyone to call him “Lord God the Pope!”

  19. Catholic Claim to be the Oldest Church! • IF Peter does not fit the Mold of what they call a POPE, how could the man in Rome today be Peter’s successor? • If he is NOT Peter’s successor , WHO IS HE?

  20. 2 Thessalonians 2:3,4 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.”

  21. 1 Timothy 4:1-3 “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.”

  22. Peter Was Not a Pope! To Make the Claim that he was is to Disregard the Scriptures!
