  2. DHL Turkey: Union recognition campaign Deutsche Post DHL is headquartered in Germany.The majority shareholder is the German government. When DHL workers began to organise in Turkey with their union TUMTIS, they were fired and threatened. Workers were offered bribes to join a rival company union. ITF: DEVELOPING STRATEGIC CAMPAIGNS

  3. TUMTIS targeted DHL following a successful campaign against UPS, as part of a plan to organise the industry. ITF and UNI coordinate the international network of unions in global delivery companies. ITF: DEVELOPING STRATEGIC CAMPAIGNS

Arbolitos (Communication networks) • Initial contacts: • TUMTIS members contacted DHL workers • Approached workers as they went to work • Daily systematic 1 to 1 conversations with workers and families • Picket of fired workers in front of workplace • Information sessions at local cafes • When offered bribes to join the company union, workers refused • When ready, workers joined TUMTIS en mass ITF: DEVELOPING STRATEGIC CAMPAIGNS

Campaign goals • Wage increases and improved working conditions in a collective agreement with TUMTIS • Reinstatement of the sacked workers • End the campaign of intimidation in DHL Turkey and the rest of the world Workers’ problems • Wages below poverty level • Excessive overtime, speed ups and unfair discipline • Subcontracted work • Firing of 37 union workers • Pressure to resign from union and join company union ITF: DEVELOPING STRATEGIC CAMPAIGNS

  8. Campaign message DHL workers in Turkey have a right to a workplace with decent working conditions and free from discrimination, intimidation, bribery and coercion.
