  1. The Story of Chinese New Year.

  2. It was coming up to New Year. 12 animals were arguing. There was a monkey, a dog, a horse, a pig, a rabbit, an ox, a rat, a snake, a dragon, a tiger, a ram and a cockerel.

  3. The animals were arguing because each animal wanted the New Year to be named after them.

  4. “This year should be called ‘The Year of the Dragon’ because I am the fiercest!” said the dragon.

  5. The monkey thought that the year should be named after him. “I am the quickest!” he said. The dog thought it should be her. “I am the cleverest!” she said.

  6. The other animals began to argue too. They fought for hours.

  7. There was such a noise of barking and roaring, screeching and hissing, that the animals disturbed the Gods. “What are you arguing about?” they asked, “What dreadful manners you all have!” The animals were ashamed and, one by one, they explained the problem.

  8. The Gods decided that all the animals should race across the big river. The New Year would be named after the first animal to cross the river.

  9. When the Gods said, “GO!”, the animals began to race.

  10. The animals leapt into the river and began to swim as fast as they could.

  11. The ox was the strongest swimmer but the rat was clever. He jumped onto the ox’s back!

  12. When they got to the end, the rat jumped off and he won the race!

  13. One by one, the animals finished the race. Tiger was 3rd, Rabbit 4th, dragon 5th, snake 6th, horse 7th, ram 8th, monkey 9th, cockerel 10th, dog 11th and pig 12th.

  14. “Well done all of you!” said the Gods. “We will name a year after each of you in the same order that you finished the race.”

  15. One animal turned up too late for the race. That was lion. “As you missed the race and all of the years are used now, you can dance out each old year and see in each new year!”

  16. Many Chinese people believe that the year in which you were born will tell you what kind of person you are. Which year are you?
