  3. Oak is a tree or shrub of the genus Quercus of the beech family, Fagaceae. There are approximately 600 existing species of oaks. The common name "oak" also appears in the names of species in related genera, especially Lithocarpus (stone oaks), as well as in those of unrelated species such as Grevillea robusta (silky oaks) and Casuarinaceae (oaks). The Quercus genus is native to the northern hemisphere and includes deciduous and evergreen species that range from cold temperate latitudes to tropical in the Americas, Asia, Europe, and North Africa. North America contains the largest number of oak species, with approximately 90 in the United States, while Mexico has 160 species, of which 109 are endemic. The second largest center of oak diversity is China, which contains approximately 100 species.

  4. The oaks have spirally arranged leaves, with lobed margins in many species; some have sawn leaves or whole leaves with smooth margins. Many species of deciduous are marcescent, do not drop dead leaves until spring. In spring, a single oak produces male flowers (in the form of catkins) and small female flowers. The fruit is a nut called acorn or oak nut that is born in a cup-shaped structure known as a capsule; Each acorn contains a seed (rarely two or three) and takes 6 to 18 months to ripen, depending on its species. Acorns and leaves contain tannic acid, which helps protect against fungi and insects. Live oaks are distinguished by being evergreen, but in reality they are not a distinct group and, instead, they are dispersed throughout the genus.
