General Information (cont) • Username and Passwords provided to all students • Username (Ex. acker2) • Password – Initially your six digit DOB • Home Directory • Space on our network to store data (300MB) • Email • One e-mail address per student (Ex. acker2@philau.edu) • Check E-mail via: http://mail.PhilaU.edu (25 MB) • Web Sites • Personal Webspace (20 MB)

General Purpose Labs • Lab Hours • Search Hall and Technology Help Desk • 8:00 AM to Midnight (Monday - Thursday) • 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Friday • 12:00 to 5:00 PM on Saturday • 12:00 to 11:00 PM on Sunday • Library and Media Services • Lab Assistants • Departmental Labs • 2 Student Rule • Equipment • Search Hall: Pentium 4 3Ghz 1 gig RAM • Graphic Design: G5 Dual Processor MACs • Scanners, Printers, Plotters

General Purpose Labs (cont) • Lab Printing • All students allowed 500 free black and while prints per semester • After that, each black and white print will cost approximately 8 cents. • This cost is deducted from each students campus card account • Money can be deposited into this account in the library or the business office • Color printing is available at 99 cents per print (This is also deducted from their account)

Commuter Students • Must have their own Internet Service Provider (i.e. Cable/DSL/Dial Up), to utilize connection to the university through Virtual Private Network (VPN) • Can check their E-mail through: http://mail.PhilaU.edu • Can also access the Library Databases via the library website: http://www.philau.edu/library • All this information can be found on our website at: www.PhilaU.edu/oit

Residential Students (cont) • Residential Consultants (ResCons) • Team of 6 undergraduate residential students • Second line of defense after the Technology Help Desk • ResCons are assigned work orders from the Help Desk • ResCons then make appointments with students and meet with them in their dorm rooms to resolve the issues

Residential Students • Connecting your computer • Data jacks are orange in all resident rooms except for Independence Plaza • Data jacks are also indicated by the letter D in the jack ID number (63DA001) • If you use AOL, CompuServe, MSN, etc… • Reconfigure the service to use the University network (TCP/IP). Do not use the telephone line in your room.

Residential Students (cont) • Please Note: • Our network is behind a firewall. • Some online games, video conferencing clients, and file sharing clients will not pass through our firewall (i.e. EverQuest, Audiogalaxy, and Netmeeting among others) • Sharing Files • File Sharing is NOT permitted on campus, therefore file sharing must be turned off. File sharing can cause our network to slow down dramatically.

  13. Residential Students (cont) • Important Note: • Routers (wireless or otherwise), hubs, and switches are not allowed to, nor are they necessary to access our campus network • Vonage (VOIP) is also no supported by, nor will it work on the University network
