Which standard do you use for welding assembly for your own in-house production and for your partners and sub-contractors? • International standards (ISO) • National standards • In-house internal specifications (ad hoc requirements) • Combination of International or National standards + in-house specifications • Welding personnel • Qualification of the personnel in charge of welding activities in your institute • Identify in your institute a reference person who owns a deep experience in welding standards and welding specifications • Welding fabrication facilities • Do you have fabrication in-house? Technologies? • Do you have a network of subcontractors? How they are qualified? • Quality control of welds • Your quality assurance system is based on which standard? • Do you have NDT in-house facilities? • If you do not have a quality management system, how are you organised?

US HL-LHC“Ruben Carcagno” • Fabrication in house in compliance with ASME but not coded fabrication. • Reference persons for welding fabrication issues: • FERMILAB: Jaime BLOWERS • BROOKHAVEN: Al FARLAND • Qualified subcontractors, U stamp certified. • Specific adherence to US National Codes. • Internal Engineering Notes exits for: • 5031 - Pressure Vessels • 5031.1 - Piping Systems • 5031.5 - Low Pressure Vessels • 5033 - Vacuum Vessels • 5033.1 - Vacuum Windows • http://esh.fnal.gov/xms/ESHQ-Manuals/FESHM • Recent experience with DESY, fabrication according to ASME followed by a CE marking, the intervention of a notified body was mandatory. • Clear directive from CERN for the essential Safety Requirements is needed, i.e PED compliance?

KEK, TsukubaJapan “Dr. KIMURA, Nobuhiro” • No welding fabrication in house. • Reference persons for welding fabrication issues: Dr. KIMURA Nobuhiro • Design in house according to Japan Industrial Standards (JIS). • Fabrication by qualified industry. • KEK considers that JIS can comply with ISO requirements with some discrepancies. • Clear directive form CERN for the essential Safety Requirements is needed, i.e. PED compliance, Do CERN require CE marking?

Conclusion • Clear roadmap shall be defined: • Essential safety requirements, PED compliance or more; • Compliance between pressure equipment construction codes to be clarified, notified bodies shall be involved? • Do CERN require CE marking? • Equipment exposed to pressure/radiation: specific construction codes to be followed “RCC-MR”? • Design approval process to be defined: e.g. Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings (VSC) group to be consulted, • Working group for best practises in vacuum chambers design and fabrication to be launched. • For equipment hors category, Sound Engineering Practice (SEP) to be applied. A working group is needed to define SEP according to CERN needs. • Other working groups? yes
