Radical: want a great degree of change, may support the use of violence Liberal: want some change, interested in progress Moderate: open to change if necessary Conservative: want to keep the status quo, keep things the way they are Reactionary: like to change things back to the way they used to be, may support the use of violence

  3. Socialism: an ideology based on the belief that collectivist values, such as collective responsibility/interest, cooperation, economic equality, and public property should be the foundation for political , economic, and social life.

  4. Socialism was a response to classical liberalism Under classical liberalism the majority of people suffered through poverty and poor working conditions Socialism is founded upon a strong belief in cooperating to create equality.

  5. Early Socialists Robert Owen: -A British Factory Owner in New Lanark, Scotland -felt that business owners should balance between making money and treating their workers well. -believed it was the obligation of business’s to create a better community for their workers

  6. Restricted working hours (called for an 8 hour work day) Raised wages Refused to hire children under ten Provided basic health care to his workers Gave his workers a democratic voice in how the mill operated.

  7. Believed socialism would lead to the perfect balance between satisfying economic needs with physical, social, and emotional needs.

  8. Charles Fourier: -believed in Utopian Socialism:- based on cooperative communities that improve working and living conditions for industrial workers. -through careful planning, communities could be created that would provide for peoples needs.

  10. Karl Marx -the father of communism -wrote the Communist Manifesto - Marxism(communism) that the working class (proletariat) should rise up and overthrow the capitalist class (bourgeoisie) and establish a classless society where property is owned by the state.

  11. Proletariat term used by Marx to describe the industrial workers Bourgeoisie: -a French word that refers to the business-owning class during the industrial revolution.

  12. Marx believed that the proletariat needed to be in control Could use their power to equally distribute wealth, so that there would be no class. The public would control all property, and act entirely for the collective. -believed the only way succeed was through violent revolution

  13. Capitalism to Socialism would include: -private property to public property -creation of new factories controlled and owned by the government -gov control over banking -gov control over transportation and communication -free education for all children in public schools

  14. Socialist sentiment were the same. All wanted to ensure equal opportunities for individuals and distribute wealth throughout society.
