  5. Let’s go global! • Read through the example rites of passage with your partner. • Summarize each in 2-3 sentences.

  6. Theories of Adolescence • Hall- adolescence represents a transitional stage • “Something like being a fully grown animal in a cage, an animal that sees freedom but does not know quite when freedom will occur or how to handle it.” • Stressful, confusing, troubling time

  7. Theories of Adolescence • Mead- adolescence is a highly enjoyable time of life, not stressful • Stress is a by-product of society • Culture  role in development

  17. Alternative to Erikson… • Bandura: focused on interaction in understanding adolescence as well as all human development (social learning theory)

Social Development • Family- • Changes in family structure over past decades • 50% marriages end in divorce (  ) • Women in the workforce • Principle of development- adolescents becoming independent of their families • Cause conflict between parents and adults • Why do you think it creates conflict?

  20. CLIQUE • A group within a group • Fulfills the need for closeness with others • Helps achieve self-confidence • Develop independence from family • Establish values • Experiment new roles (same clothing, hair, speech for example)

  21. Conformity • Result of fear of being disliked • Acting in accordance with specified authority • “Glue” that holds peers together

  23. Difficulties in Adolescence • Juvenile delinquency • “Others may get caught, but not me!” egocentric in adolescent thought • Illusion of invulnerability

Difficulties in Adolescence • Depression • loss of loved one, relocation, divorce • Adolescent needs to be able to express their feelings in a supportive atmosphere • Typically depressed adolescents appear angry, rebel • Warning signs: withdrawal from friends, engaging in dangerous risk tasking, talk of suicide, excessive self criticism

  25. Difficulties in Adolescence • Eating Disorders • Anorexia Nervosa- refusing to eat, have intense fear of gaining weight • Often have a distorted body image, see themselves as larger than they are • Bulimia Nervosa- binge eating followed by purging • Private about behavior

  26. PSA Create a public service announcement with your group that we will present to the class in 15 minutes These should include- • Problems that adolescents face (narrow down to 1 or 2) 2. Statistics you find (use computers) 3. Warning signs for troubled adolescents 3. POSITIVE, ENCOURAGING suggestions!  ABOUT 2 MINUTES IN LENGTH
