  4. Corinth:“Encouragement needed” Acts 18: After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2 And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. And he went to see them, 3 and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade. 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks. 5 When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20 Who did Paul meet? What did they have in common? Missionaries don’t always have jobs separate from the ministry…but how & why would Paul do so?

  5. Corinth:“Encouragement needed” Acts 18: 6 And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” 7 And he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God. His house was next door to the synagogue. 8 Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized. 9 And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, “Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, 10 for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.” 11 And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20 Why would God’s words so needed at this time? Were they effective? How do you know?

  7. The NAZARITE VOW :“temporal vow of a dedicated life” Acts 18: 18 After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of the brothers[c] and set sail for Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow. 19 And they came to Ephesus, and he left them there, but he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined. 21 But on taking leave of them he said, “I will return to you if God wills,” and he set sail from Ephesus. 22 When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. Hebrew: form Nazar ‘to separate/set apart’ The word denotes generally one who is separated from others and consecrated to God. Although there is no mention of any Nazarite before Samson, yet it is evident that they existed before the time of Moses. the name of such Israelites as took on them the vow prescribed in Num. 6:2-21 Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20

  8. The NAZARITE VOW :“temporal vow of a dedicated life” • The vow of a Nazarite involved these three things, • abstinence from wine and strong drink, • refraining from cutting the hair off the head during the whole period of the continuance of the vow, and… • the avoidance of contact with the dead. Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20

  9. The NAZARITE VOW :“temporal vow of a dedicated life” • When the period of the continuance of the vow came to an end, the Nazarite had to present himself at the door of the sanctuary with… • a he lamb of the first year for a burnt-offering • a ewe lamb of the first year for a sin-offering • a ram for a peace-offering • After these sacrifices were offered by the priest, the Nazarite cut off his hair at the door and threw it into the fire under the peace-offering. Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20

  10. Ephesus:“Short stay w/Dear friends” Acts 18: 18 After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of the brothers[c] and set sail for Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila. Why could Paul leave Ephesus? What would be required of them? Are you wondering if your place in the church could ever the same? Consider such a calling… such couples are hard to find… Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20

  11. Ephesus :“Teachability” Acts 18: 24 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus. Describe Apollos? What was lacking? What is Apollos’ most valuable character trait? Why? What was lacking in Apollos? As verse 28 concludes, what must A & P have shared with Apollos? Consider A & P’s role. How was this a risky act of love? Consider the power of hospitality… Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20

  12. Ephesus :“Teachability (of another sort)” Acts 19:  Paul in Ephesus And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland[a] country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John's baptism.” 4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in[b] the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. 7 There were about twelve men in all This is a tricky passage—one that can lead to contradictions if not carefully interpreted with respect to what Scripture says of John his disciples, his baptism, Christ, and His baptism. These were believers, however what seemed to be missing? To whom could they be compared? It seems that a conversion, then isolation took place—as if they repented, believed in the Promise…but had no further knowledge of the Promise--the end John’s baptism had in view, that is—Christ’s life, work, and partnering with the Holy Spirit. Paul sees the dire need to educate and baptize them as these disciples did not understand Christ’s fulfillment--the very soul of Salvation and Sanctification… Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20 Acts 19 4 stories Part 2

  13. Ephesus :“Teachability(of other sorts)” Acts 19: The Spirit teaches through Paul… 11 And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. Read verse 11. How does this relate to today? Is the Holy Spirit still active? 1. Pattern for us to desire to follow (Pentecostal) 2. Apostolic age (Reformed; purposes: jump-start Church, signs as sobriety of Doctrine/Nature of God—where methods seem different, but God is unchanged) Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20

  14. Ephesus :“Teachability(of other sorts)” Acts 19: A Demon exacts a Lesson… 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15 But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” Why would God include this story about the sons of Sceva? Consider the holiness of God—one ought not wield the Spirit unworthily… Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20

  15. Their value was perhaps as low as $8000 by today’s standards (if a drachma is worth 18 cents) or as much as $3 million (using Citrus county estimates) if a drachma is a day’s wage…one scholar was quick to remind us that ancient books were far more precious to the owner than in modern day, partly justifying their huge sum. Ephesus :“Teachability(of other sorts)” Acts 19: First recorded book burning… 17 And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. 18 Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. 19 And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. Why would God include these details? What is their reaction to the false teachings and occult… Why is this rejection of the occult so vehemently commanded by the OT and the NT? Consider where they get their power… Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20 Acts 19 4 stories Part 3

  16. Ephesus:“Artemisian Riot” Acts 19: What reasons did Demetrius give to cause Ephesus to erupt in an uproar? 1. $$ (loss of) 2. stripping Diana of her majesty” Which seems the greater motive? How can you tell? What does reason #2 suggest? Roman law worked to keep things in check… Acts 19 4 stories Part 4 Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20

  17. Ephesus:Summary Acts 18,19: When fostering a movement, the important thing is that God has to act: - Not an accident w/ Apollos - Not an accident that Paul found the 12 men - Occult power overthrown - Murderous riot quelled Why would Luke string together 4 seemingly unrelated stories? Discussion: How have you seen God bringing things together at just the right places & times in order to grow the Kingdom and bring Himself glory? Acts of the Apostles: ch 18-20

  18. Ephesus :“Teachability(of other sorts)” Why would God include this? Why the line about the lamps? Remember this next time you start to fall asleep in class… Acts 20: Paul’s travels…Bored to death 7 On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered. 9 And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. 10 But Paul went down and bent over him, and taking him in his arms, said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” 11 And when Paul had gone up and had broken bread and eaten, he conversed with them a long while, until daybreak, and so departed. 12 And they took the youth away alive, and were not a little comforted.
