  4. Introduction • The concept of Relay was introduced in the last meeting [1] • Quick recap in next slide • Backward learning bridge is used for populating the forwarding tables • However, in some conditions, backward learning is not possible • Due to the absence of data frames to be used for learning • We propose to define a ‘Reachable Address’ Frame to be used for explicitly updating the forwarding tables Jafarian, Qualcomm

  5. Recap Root AP (Rt-AP) • Backward learning bridge principle may be used to set up the forwarding tables • R-STA is a non-AP STA with the following capabilities • 4 address support • Supports forwarding and receiving frames from the R-AP • R-AP is an AP with the following additional capabilities • 4 address support mandatory, i.e., • Supports forwarding and receiving frames to/from the R-STA Jafarian, Qualcomm

  6. Issue with backward learning bridge • Issues: • When STA moves to another Relay, MAC solution may not rely on higher layer protocols to send an MSDU to AP; if no MSDU is sent, backward learning is not possible; we need a fallback mechanism for a robust MAC solution • Nowadays, ARP is commonly used and when associating with an AP, STA usually starts ARP; but when moving between two relays in same subnet, STA need not re-do ARP and may not send any frame to AP • Also, MAC-only or other new protocols other than ARP may be used in the future for new IoT applications • When a Relay moves to another AP, it needs to update the parent AP with its children MAC addresses • Upon moving Relays and STAs, we need to guarantee the consistency of forwarding tables Jafarian, Qualcomm

  7. Solution • R-STA to use a Layer 2 “ReachableAddress” message to update root AP about new STAs, if the STAs do not send frames to root AP that allow for backward learning • Message may include a list of MAC addresses and other fields that help the AP to update its forwarding tables and resolves conflicts Jafarian, Qualcomm

  8. Straw poll • Move to include in the SFD the ReachableAddress message that is used to update the forwarding tables? • Content and format TBD Jafarian, Qualcomm
