  2. We are not under the Ten Commandments Today “For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband.” Romans 7:2 “Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another--to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.” Romans 7:4

  4. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Ex.20:3 # 1 First in number and importance In Egypt there were many gods Isa. 45:5 “I am the Lord, and there is no other” Monotheism = belief in one God 1 Cor. 8:6 “yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, ”

  5. “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” Ex.20:4-6 # 2 Not to make an idol - to represent a god God is Spirit - Jn. 4:24 - Images are lifeless Rom. 1:21-25 - worshipped the creature not the creator 1 Cor. 10:14 “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.” 1 John 5:21 “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

  6. “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” Ex.20:7 # 3 God’s name is important to Him - Psalms 8:1 Vain = to use lightly or irreverently - worthless, empty Ps. 111:9 “Holy and reverend is his name” = respect Swearing is wrong - James 5:12 “do not swear” Profanity is condemned - Eph. 4:29 By-words - Euphemisms

  7. “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.” Ex.20:8-11 # 4 Sabbath = 7th day of the week Keep it holy - do not work Between God and Jews - Ex. 31:17 Not repeated in New Testament Col. 2:14-17 - old law taken away We worship on 1st day - Lord’s Day Rev. 1:10 “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day,”

  8. “Honor thy father and thy mother.” Ex.20:12 # 5 Honor = respect, revere, esteem Designed to protect the home Parents must teach children to respect and honor authority A command to parents & children - Eph. 6:1-2 Disobedience is serious - Deut.21:18-21

  9. “Thou shalt not kill.” Ex.20:13 # 6 Murder Prevent murder by dealing with Hatred - Matt. 5:21-22 Hatred is the cause of murder Jesus wants to eliminate the cause Learn to love all your neighbors - 1 John 4:20-21 Do not try to get revenge - Rom. 12:17-21 Love your enemies - Matt. 5:43-48

  10. “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” Ex.20:14 # 7 Violation of marriage covenant Begins with lust - Matt. 5:28 “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Abstain or get married Heb. 13:4 “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”

  11. “Thou shalt not steal.” Ex.20:15 # 8 Violation of the right to own property Stealing is taking of that which belongs to another Rom. 13:9 “You shall not steal” Get a Job - work “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.” Eph. 4:28

  12. “Thou shalt not bear false witness.” Ex.20:16 # 9 Not to lie in a court of law Not make false accusations / slander Liars will not be in heaven - Rev. 21:8 Speak the truth “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.” Eph. 4:25

  13. “Thou shalt not covet.” Ex.20:17 # 10 “A greedy desire to have more” “Seeking to get what is another’s in an unlawful way” The covetous person is selfish and is never satisfied: “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” Ecl. 5:10 Overcome by learning contentment Heb. 13:5 “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

  14. T he en Commandments oday Do not apply To us Ended at the Cross - Col. 2:14 We have a new and better way under Christ Nine of the commandments are part of the New Law – the Law of Christ
