  1. Compound Sentences Super fun

  2. Compound Sentences are made of two independent clauses.

  3. Independent Clauses are complete sentences. The cat was sleepy. It fell asleep under the bed.

  4. Compound Sentences Combine the two, choppy sentences (INDEPENDENT CLAUSES) to make one nice, big sentence. The cat was sleepy, so he fell asleep under the bed. If you combine sentences they need to be related- like cousins.

  5. Compound Sentences Can be combined two ways.

  6. Combo #1 , + Conjunction FANBOYS

  7. Comma + Conjunction The cat was sleepy, for he played all day. The cat was sleepy, and he was hungry too. The cat wasn’t sleepy, nor was he hungry. The cat was sleepy, but he couldn’t find a place to sleep. The cat could take a nap, or he could eat dinner. The cat was sleepy, yet he didn’t want to fall asleep yet. The cat was sleepy, so he went to take a nap.

  8. Practice Time

  9. Combo #2 Semicolon ; To use a semicolon to hold two independent clauses together, the two sentences must be closely related- like brother and sister. The cat played in the yard all day; he was sleepy.

  10. ; The second independent clause must give more information about the first clause. The space goes after the semicolon. The cat played in the yard all day; he was sleepy.

  12. COMPLEX SENTENCES Shouldn't give you a headache

  13. Complex sentences • Independent clause +Dependent clause DOES NOT NEED HELP! NEEDS SOME HELP!

  15. DEPENDENT CLAUSES HAVE SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

  16. If the subordinating conjunction is at the beginning, you need a comma. • After getting home from the store I realized I forgot the salt. • When I picked up the trash I puked • Whenever I see Mrs. Disque I smile. • Even if I am having a bad day English class always makes me feel better. • Because she is so sweet Mrs. Disque is my favorite teacher.

  17. You do not need a comma if the subordinating conjunction is in the middle. • I realized I forgot the saltaftergetting home from the store. • I pukedwhenI picked up the trash • I smile wheneverI see Mrs. Disque. • English class always makes me feel better even if I am having a bad day . • Mrs. Disque is my favorite teacherbecauseshe is so sweet.
