  6. - Isle of Wight- Why is the Isle of Wight such a good place to teach outdoor education? The Isle of Wight also provides a wide range of natural and human environments making it a fabulous place to work with children and young people. The Isle of Wight has a very diverse flora and fauna and stunning coastal scenery. The East Dene Manor House is set in its own extensive grounds and boasts large open spaces excellent for outdoor activities, as well as its own mature woodlands which is home to a myriad of creatures, including red squirrels. The local coastline offers opportunities to explore rock pools, discover Ventnor’s smuggling past and see how people and nature interact in a dynamic environment. The Isle of Wight also has a mild climate with Ventnor being one of the warmest places in the UK. What about actually living there? East Dene, in Bonchurch, offers the opportunity to live and work in a 17th Century manor house. The centre has a family and friendly atmosphere and is always strengthening its links to the local community through partnerships and special events. Although set in a peaceful village location, the centre is within easy reach of local leisure facilities; local clubs are always welcoming new members. Past and present tutors have been involved in activities ranging from water sports to samba drumming!! The Isle of Wight also plays host to some renowned events. These range from the famous Cowes Week Regatta and the increasingly popular Isle of Wight Music Festival to the more eccentric Island Garlic Festival.

  7. - Swanage - Why is Swanage such a good place to teach outdoor education? Situated on Dorset’s Isle of Purbeck, Swanage is a superb location for outdoor learning in many forms. The chalk and limestone coastline is famous for its starring role in many geography textbooks, whilst the cliffs themselves are ideal for climbers of all abilities. Dorset’s southern coastline is also England’s only Natural World Heritage Site featuring the longest known continuous fossil record in the world, as well as having a wealth of current day flora and fauna. Situated in a sandy bay and nestled between chalk downland and a limestone plateau, Swanage can offer a diverse range of natural and human environments in a small area. Swanage also enjoys a relatively mild climate making it appeal to groups over an extended season. What about actually living there? Swanage has a great deal to offer outside of work. Living in the town it is possible to participate in a wide variety of activities including walking, climbing, sailing and sea rowing. There are also plenty of opportunities to eat out, socialise and become involved with community activities. Throughout the year Swanage plays host to a number of popular events such as the Swanage Folk Festival, a Jazz Festival, Carnival and Regatta Week, the Purbeck Film Festival and even a Pumpkin Festival which all helps to give the town a vibrant feeling.

Children will discover the features and wonders of the coastal environment through hands-on learning in a mix of activities. The programme is carefully planned and structured so that the children are led through a series of linked topics. The week is run in a way which inspires personal responsibility for sustainability and group responsibility for each other. Outdoor Adventure The Outdoor Adventure Programme aims to use natural habitats to challenge the children to stretch themselves physically and emotionally in a risk controlled environment. The children will explore, make shelters, pioneer and have real adventures. Programmes are designed to engage, inspire and challenge everyone at their own level; respecting each other person’s skills and abilities and stretching their own.
