Scrutiny (noun): the act of carefully examining something in a critical way “Unaware of public scrutiny from above, Judge Taylor disposed of the severed end (of the cigar) by propelling it expertly to his lips…” (253). 2. Irrelevant (adjective): not important or relating to what is being discussed right now “Slowly but surely I began to see the pattern of Atticus’ questions: from questions that Mr. Gilmer did not deem sufficiently irrelevant …” (245). 3. Bewildered (adjective): very confused “ One corner of the yard, though, bewildered Maycomb” (228). 4. Smugly (adverb): having or showing excessive pride in oneself or one’s achievements “ Mr. Ewell was sitting smugly in the witness chair, surveying his handiwork” (232). 5. To Hurl (verb): to throw with great force “Thomas Jefferson once said that all men are created equal, a phrase that Yankees […] are fond of hurling at us” (274).
