Reaction to fire classification for cables • The draft Mandate • Mandate to CEN/CENELEC concerning standardisation work for harmonised standards • Scope covers power, control and communication cables for use in buildings and other civil engineering works (all voltages included and fibre optics) • Scope covers reaction to fire, resistance to fire and dangerous substances • Agreed by EGF (Dec06) for SCC vote (Apr07)

Reaction to fire classification for cables • Extended application (EXAP) rules • What cables to test to gain approval for a complete range • Must be agreed by Commission so needs the involvement of third party test laboratories • Europacable propose an Industry funded project with SP and other third party laboratories to establish rules

Reaction to fire classification for cables • Euroclass table as a Regulatory tool • Legally only applies to products subject to regulation • Regulation is a National matter • Regulatory position on resistance to fire may be different to that on reaction to fire • Classification is a ranking which is dependent on the test parameters chosen by the EC
