Point of View

Point of view refers to who is telling the story and how it is told.

The person who is telling the story is called the NARRATOR

Types of P.O.V. used in literature

  • 1st person p.o.v.: the standpoint that a story is told from in which a character that is in the story presents the action.

  • This character only knows his/her own thoughts and feelings.

  • Can identify 1st person p.o.v. by the frequent use of I, me, my, we, our and us

  • 3rd Person p.o.v.: is a story that is being told by a narrator who is OUTSIDE of the story. There are 3 types of 3rd person p.o.v.:

  • 3rd person limited p.o.v.

  • 3rd person objective p.o.v.

  • Omniscient

  • 3rd person limited p.o.v.: the narrator presents the story from outside and gives the thoughts and feelings of only ONE major or minor character

  • 3rd person objective p.o.v : the narrator tells the story as a detached observer. The narrator does not tell the reader the thoughts and feelings of ANY of the characters.

  • The objective narrator is the most reliable because he/she JUST presents the events and it is up to reader to determine the meaning of those events.

  • Omniscient narrator: a type of 3rd person p.o.v. This narrator is known as “The All-Knowing” narrator.

  • The omniscient narrator gives the reader the thoughts and feelings of ALL of the characters in the story
