From January 2005 Update • Communication Projects • Classified staff association • Improved communications • Annual meeting with all three campuses • Recruitment Projects • Students recruiting students • Scholarships as a recruitment tool • Improved recruiting in area high schools • Retention Projects • Improved counseling and guidance for pre-allied health majors • Improved communication between faculty, advisors and students • Increased student activities

  3. Strategic Priority Worksheets • Committees met to discuss Vital Focus action plan outlines furnished by the Higher Learning Commission • The decision was made to combine projects into three action plan outlines: communication, retention and recruitment • Action plan outlines completed

CommunicationBroad Goals • Upgrade outdated equipment • Provide training for current technology tools • Create manuals/directories where necessary to reinforce training • Provide students with skills necessary to use technology • Improve signage on all campuses • Improve communication with students, especially those at risk of dropping out

  5. RecruitingBroad Goals • Increase the number of area graduating seniors enrolling at PCCUA each fall • Establish relationships with high school students as early as the 8th grade • Develop new recruiting materials that emphasize career ladders, PCCUA degrees and transfer opportunities

RetentionBroad Goals • Design reading and freshman seminar courses specifically for pre-allied health majors • Pilot a learning community for pre-allied health • Improve counseling and guidance for pre-allied health majors • Increase student activities for all students • Study the correlation between Pell disbursal and student drop dates

  7. Next Steps • Institutional Planning and Effectiveness Team will: • Develop a process for a strategic plan and operational plans • Fold Vital Focus into this plan • Determine the depth of planning (Vice Chancellors, Divisions, Deans) • Guide the plan

Title III: Maximizing Student Achievement and Retention • Award Period: October 1, 2005 – September 30, 2010 • Award Amount: $1,823,444 • Component 1: Creating a comprehensive program of information-based student support • Component 2: Strengthening developmental education and basic skills reinforcement in gateway courses

  9. Title III Personnel • Title III Coordinator (.5) • Secretary (.5) • Activity Director (1) • Educational Technology Specialist (1) • Student Tracking Specialist (1) • Tutors • Faculty release time

Component One: information-based student support • Year one: faculty/staff development to support assessment/placement, advisement, career and educational planning • Year two: early alert/referral systems • Year three: progress tracking/degree audit systems • Year four: integration of support systems • Year five: evaluation of support systems

Component two: Developmental Ed. and Gateway courses • Year one: developmental math, reading/writing, structured tutoring program, faculty development • Year two: technical program gateway course • Year three: humanities, social science • Year four: science and fine arts • Year five: evaluation

  12. The Endowment$337,000 over 5 years • Held by college or foundation • Set aside for 20 years • College must provide match before federal funds are drawn • May use up to 50% of income over the 20 years for most anything
