  2. Slavery • The country was divided evenly between free and slave states • Southerners feared that any shift in power would result in limits on slavery

  3. Missouri Compromise • 1820 • Admitted Missouri as a slave state • In order to maintain balance, also admitted Maine as a free state • Prohibited slavery above the extended Mason-Dixon Line

  4. Compromise of 1850 • California was admitted as a free state • The slave trade was abolished (the sale of slaves, not the institution of slavery) in the District of Columbia. • The Territory of New Mexico (including present-day Arizona) and the Territory of Utah were under the rule of popular sovereignty. • The Fugitive Slave Act was passed, requiring all U.S. citizens to assist in the return of runaway slaves. • Texas gave up land but received money to pay off its debt from the war

  5. Kansas-Nebraska Act • 1854 • Allows the people of Kansas and Nebraska to choose if they want to be free or slave • Repeals the Missouri Compromise • Bleeding Kansas
