  1. ECE5320 MechatronicsAssignment#01: Literature Survey on Sensors and Actuators Topic: Thermal Actuator Prepared by: Cory Larsen Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering Utah State University E: ; T: (435)797-; F: (435)797-3054 (ECE Dept.) W: http:// 3/11/2010

  2. Outline • Reference list • To probe further • Major applications • Basic working principle illustrated • A typical sample configuration in application • Major specifications • Limitations • And many more relevant issues in applications (such as, how to choose, cost information, where to buy etc.) ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  3. Reference list Robert H. Bishop. Editor-in-chief. “The Mechatronics Handbook”, CRC Press, with ISA–The Instrumentation, Systems, Automation Society (50 Chapters), 2002. ISBN: 0-8493-0066-5. http://www.thermalactuators.com Dong Yan. Mechanical Design and Modeling of MEMS Thermal Actuators for RF Applications. Masters Thesis. 2002. http://www.rostravernatherm.com/thermal-actuators.htm http://www.caltherm.com/Thermal%20Actuators.html http://www.mems.sandia.gov/about/actuators.html http://matthieu.lagouge.free.fr/mems/thermal.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  4. To explore further http://www.caltherm.com/Thermal%20Actuators.html http://www.mems.sandia.gov/about/actuators.html http://www.thermalactuators.com ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  5. Major Applications • There are two main types of thermal actuators: • Thermally Activated Linear Actuators • Micro-elctromechanical systems (MEMS) ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  6. Major applications Thermally Activated Actuators • Control fuel & oil temperature • Automotive thermal bypass valve • Freeze/Scald Protection • UV Purification ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  7. Major Applications (continued) MEMS • Positioning of micro-mirrors • Micro-switch activation • Micro-engines ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  8. Basic Working Principal Thermally Activated Heat applied to the system causes thermal expansion. This is then amplified pushing the piston out. When the system cools, the thermosensitive material shrinks allowing the piston to return. http://www.thermalactuators.com/materials.htm ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  9. Basic Working Principal (continued) MEMS One form of MEMS thermal actuator is the asymmetric arm. The thinner arm gets hotter causing the armature to move to the right. http://matthieu.lagouge.free.fr/mems/thermal.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  10. Basic Working Principal (continued) MEMS Bilayer stuctures is another type of MEMS thermal actuator. The top layer has higher thermal expansion causing the arm to bend upwards. http://matthieu.lagouge.free.fr/mems/thermal.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  11. Basic Working Principle (continued) MEMS V-Shaped Actuators Constrained thermal expansion of beam force movement in the direction of the arrow. Activated through electrical signal. http://www.mems.sandia.gov/about/actuators.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  12. Basic Working Principle (continued) MEMS Ratcheting Actuators Basically a V-Shaped Actuator attached to a ratcheting hub. http://www.mems.sandia.gov/about/actuators.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  13. Sample Configurations Thermal actuators come with mounting threads to be easily incorporated into your system. Thermal actuators can also be machined into your system. http://www.thermalactuators.com/work.htm ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  14. Sample Configurations Example within a MEMS system ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  15. Major Specifications • Precision • Can be measured within 0.005” • Piston Travel Range • Piston moves anywhere from 0.015” to 0.5” • Operating Temperature • 30F-300F • Max Load • Handles loads up to 70 lbs. pressure. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  16. Limitations • High Power Consumption (if electrically activated) • Low Switching Frequency ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  17. Limitations (continued) Limited Performance Range http://www.caltherm.com/Thermal%20Actuators.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  18. Where To Buy • Caltherm • Rostra Vernatherm • Thermalactuators.com • Nowhere seemed to sell MEM thermal actuators, these probably need to be made in house. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  19. Cost Information • Options are limited. • None of the websites I found listed the costs. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  20. How to Choose • Rank specifications by importance. (e.g. cost, precision, max lbs, etc.) • Choose actuator that best fits your ranked list of needs. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
