  1. StudentAffairs.com Case Study: February 20, 2013 A comprehensive plan complied by Ms. ConcettaD’Alessio, Mr. Thomas Gelok, & Ms. Meghan Kilfeather of the University at Buffalo. D’Alessio, Gelok, Kilfeather are all enrolled in the Higher Education Administration (Ed.M) program.

  2. Agenda: • Define a vision statement for the town-gown relationship between Sunnyvale University and the New England community • Determine short term goals in which the committee can alleviate immediate concerns and educate students, staff, faculty and community members of potential solutions. • Develop long term goals in which the committee can maintain a positive and lasting change for town-gown relations • Utilize social media to educate and inform students, staff, faculty and community members of events and continued improvement

Sunnyvale University Town-Gown Vision Statement: • Sunnyvale University and the greater New England Community strive to build and maintain positive and mutually beneficial town-gown relationships. Through the creation of meaningful collaborative relationships with community members, local businesses and policy makers, Sunnyvale University will promote a high quality living-learning environment for all. Collaborations for student involvement, community outreach, career development opportunities and other projects will generate economic benefits and foster positive relations.

  4. Short Term Goals Overview: Short term goals, as determined by the committee, are from the present formation of the committee up to the first three months. The main focus during this time is to determine the current condition of the town-gown relationship and seek immediate rectifications. In this time we seek to: • Collect information regarding the current relationship • Survey and educate students and community members • Collaborate with student groups and the community to offer immediate alternatives for students to participate in

Short Term Goal #1: Immediate alleviation of town concerns with preliminary programs and procedures to repair town-gown relationship. • Hold an open forum with community members and business owners, Deputy Mayor, Sunnyvale President, and the Student Senate President. • Preliminary shuttle running from campus to town for late nights and weekends. • Assist Sunnyvale town police with ticketing off-campus • Training Police & Campus Safety for immediate rectification

  6. Short Term Goal #2: Survey, inform and involve students about existing issues with the community. • Meeting with the Student Senate Executive Board & General Membership • Out reach to Sunnyvale Times (newspaper) with editorial by Deputy Major & Dean

  7. Short Term Goal #3: Provide immediate alternatives for student engagement on campus, and positive off campus alternatives. • Implement weekend/late night programming events sponsored by Residential Life and/or Student Activities that engage students in educational and social activities. • Develop relationships with off campus vendors.

  8. Long Term Goals Overview: Long term goals, as determined by the committee, are action plans intended to be implemented after the first three months of the committee formation. The main focus during this time is to develop relationships with the community and establish a strategic plan for the future. In this time we seek to: • Determine additional resources needed to sustain a healthy town-gown relationship • Develop new protocols and procedures to handle town-gown concerns • Establish relationships that integrate community members into the campus community and students into the local community.

  9. Long Term Goal #1: Develop professional positions to foster positive off campus relationships with the institution and community members. • Addition of five professional positions • Academic affairs internship program with community members

  11. Long Term Goal #2: Develop procedures and protocols for parking and transportation. • Implement permanent shuttle system. • Develop off-campus parking policies.

  12. Long Term Goal #3: Establish professional development and training programming for community members. • Campus Safety, Local Police, & Emergency Responders • Community members

Long Term Goal #4: Institute service learning into current campus life and curriculum to enhance cognitive awareness of off campus concerns. • Develop off campus programming initiatives and community involvement. • Implement requirement of community service for on campus student groups. • Develop service-learning.
