  2. Three Objectives • Share in reality of human existence • Survival, Eating, Sleeping, Suffering, Death • Establish right to Messiahship • Become known • Gain subjects for his coming earthly kingdom • Gain them from out of the enemy’s kingdom

Temptation #1 • Mt 4:1-4 1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.*’” (*De 8:3) • Mankind’s primary need is not survival • Jesus feeds the 5000, Jn 6:1-21 • Crowds follows after Jesus, Jn 6:22-27 • Crowd: “What must we do to the works God requires?” • Jesus: “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he sent”

  4. Temptation #2 • Mt 4:5-7 5Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 7Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” • Mankind’s primary need is not meaning • Jesus’ brothers said to him, “…go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do. No one who wants to be a public figure acts in secret. Show yourself to the world.” Jn 7:3-5 • Jesus told them, “…I am not yet going…for me the right time has not yet come.” Jn 7:6-8

Temptation #3 • Mt 4:8-11 8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9“All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” 11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. • Mankind’s primary need is not to rule and control • “The kingdom (singular) of this world (cosmos) is become the kingdoms (plural) of our Lord and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” (Rev 11:15)

Summary • First moral law: The Lord Is God, Worship Only Him • Translation: I’m God You’re Not! • Christ’s words to Thomas (Jn 20:28) • In Spirit and in truth (Jn 4:20-26) • Christ’s Humanness • Survival – Food, Clothing, Shelter, Health • Meaning – Wonder, Significance, Fame • Ruling – Power, Control, Agenda

  7. Application • Jn12:25,26 Jesus said: “Whoever loves the life they have now will lose it. But whoever is willing to give up their life in this world will keep it. They will have eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me. My servants must be with me everywhere I am. My Father will give honor to anyone who serves me. • Whose agenda am I living by? (Ro 12:1) • Am I willing to give up my life? (Ep 5:25) • Am I willing to serve and follow him? (Gal 5:13)
