  2. Housing • The homes include low-emissivity windows, attic insulation with heat resistance, exterior foam building wraps and tight ducts, preventing heat from leaking out during the winter and in during the summer • They are equipped with variable-speed furnaces with a 94% AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating, which means 94% of the fuel is converted to heat, with only 6% lost through the chimney (translating to higher Energy Star rating) • Builders diverted 75% of all concrete, roofing, drywall and wood waste from the landfill • Framing lumber and concrete came from local sources, minimizing the pollution and fuel use required to ship the materials to the building site. Indoor environmental air quality is boosted by the use of a dedicated mechanical ventilation system for fresh air, and both the mechanical ventilation and HVAC systems underwent third-party verification.

  3. Appliances • High ENERGY STAR ratings, with low-flush toilets and lower water pressure • Timers on dishwasher, clothes washer, sinks, showers so that water automatically shuts off after certain time • Rain barrels, water filters, and tanks to clean and store rainwater for later use • Solar-powered heater, water heater

  4. Landscape • Native plants, some combined with cacti to increase water conservation • As many trees as possible to reduce pollution • Composts in which to deposit food scraps, recycling center to recycle

  5. Transportation • Electric pod cars– fold up when in storage, charge using solar panels on the roof, and store extra energy into the grid while parked • Driverless bus– runs on a mix of biodiesel and electricity • Finds passengers using magnets embedded in lanes– central computer controls on-demand routing, service frequency and total route capacity

  6. Services • Maglev Skytran carries 14,400 people an hour– it could also be used to carry some people and some mail • Goes up to 150 mph, and pulls into a pit lane at quarter-mile intervals with arrival/departure portals • Railway lined with magnetic coils, pods feature permanent magnets • $10 million a mile to build • Only 1/10 cost of light rail equivalent
