  6. Westtoer in Accessing the Countryside In the ATC project Westtoer realised 2 activities : • The development of a database for the maintenance of the recreational network • The signposting of the green and blue network

  7. Activity 1 : Database Westtoerdevelops a list of productsforrecreationalpupose : • Cycling • 36 cycling loops • LF-itineraries, including Coast Cycling route • 1 Cycle network • Hiking • 52 loop-shaped scenery hike trails • 15 loop-shaped inheritance hike trails • Horseback riding • 15 loop shaped trails • Motoring/car driving • 10 loop shaped trails

  8. Activity 1 : Database • Overview of the recreationalproductstomaintain: • Recreational loops • Hikingtrails : 424 km • Cyclingtrails : 1629 km • Horseback riding : 307 km • Motor/cardriving : 678 km • Moutainbike : 364 km • Networks • Hikingnetwork : 673 km • Cyclenetwork : 2664 km

  9. Activity 1 : Database • Pro-active system for the reporting of complaintsabout the recreationalnetwork • How? • 630 volunteers (godfather andgodmother of a part of the recreationalnetwork) • Task? • Checking the recreational loops andnetworks • Reporting of problemswithsignposting • Period? • April tilloctober • Frequency? • 5 times • 3 volunteers / loop or network

  10. Activity 1 : Database • Type of recreationalproduct: Numberof volunteers • Hikingloops : 160 volunteers • Cycleloops : 146 volunteers • Horse Back riding: 14 volunteers • Carand Motor routes : 7 volunteers • Mountainbike : 21 volunteers • CycleNetwork : 274 volunteers • Coast cyclenetwork: 13 volunteers • Hikingnetwork: 203 volunteers

  11. Activity 1 : Database EachyearWesttoerorganises 3 meetings for the volunteers : • 2 meetings in februaryandmarchto start the season • 1 meeting in september for a dedicated part of the volunteers (f.e. bikers, walkers …) forwhich a half day program is offeredbyWesttoer.

  12. Activity 1 : Database • InternalorganisationWesttoer • 1 FTE Administration volunteers • Task : • Organisation of the check-ups • Organisation of meetings withvolunteers • First point of contact with the volunteers • Handling complaints (receptionans feedback) • 1/2 FTE Coordination Maintenance • Task : • Reception of the complaints (research in the TRIS database, contact withmunicipalities …) • Coordination of the maintenance teams • 3,8 FTE Maintenance • Task : • Solvingcomplaints • Feedback on complaints • Realisation of new recreationalproducts

  13. Activity 1 : Database • Whenyou have to manage all the recreationalproductsyouneed, besides a group of verydedicatedvolunteersandstaff at Westtoer, a system to manage itall. • The answertothis is the TRIS database.

  14. Activity 1 : Database • TRIS = Touristicandrecreational Information System • Technical • Based on JAVA technologie and LAMP stack • Managesalfanumerical data andgeographical data in oneenvironemt. • Open Source technology – source availableforeveryone on GITHUB account

  15. Activity 1 : Database • Goals in the ATC project : • A GPS steeredtask list : this system enables a daily list tobe sent toevery team withtasks or issues toresolve. The use of GPS will make the process of identifyingandsolvingproblemsalong the newtork more efficientandeffective • A GIS solution tobeused on rugged hand held palm tops : Toenable the efficient on-site management of pathsnetworksbyvolunteersand field staff. Tasksinclude the marking of diversions on the network, preparing the positioning of signpostingandinterpretation boards along the networkandrecordinganyproblemstoenablethemtobeeffectivelyresolved.

  16. Activity 1 : Database • Goals in the ATC project : • Portable hand-held device linkedto IT database system foruse in the field : A portable extension for the volunteersto print the materialsneededto monitor andassesstheirsection of the network

  17. Activity 1 : Database • TRIS database : • Toreach the goals as defined in the ATC project, it was necessarytobuild a database in whichall data about the recreationalnetwork was storagedandwhichallowedusto manage allavailable data. • We choosefor the JAVA technologybecauseit is veryeaselyscalableandbecauseit is open source. This means thatall of ourdevelopment code is available on a GIT HUB Account • The TRIS datbasecontains : • GIS data : Trajects, junctions, Signposting • Alfalnumerical data : Adresses of the volunteers • Schemesto check the recreationalnetwork • A tool to manage complaints • A tool to manage the GIS part (editing the recreationalnetwork)

  18. Activity 1 : Database • TRIS database :

  19. Activity 1 : Database • TRIS database :

  20. Activity 1 : Database • TRIS database :

  21. Activity 1 : Database • A GPS steeredtask list : • Westtoer has 4 men workingfor the maintenance of the recreationalnetwork • Eachdaythey get theirtasksby the coordinator • On theiriPadtheysee a list of complaintsdedicatedtotheir team • In the field theyresolve the complaintsbychangingtheir status from open toclosed • Byusingtopographicmapsand the build-in GPS on the device, they are abletosee the position on the map • Based on the built-in GPS theysee the complaints in an order based on the ‘nearby’ principle of GPS tracking

  22. Activity 1 : Database • Daily list of complaints

  23. Activity 1 : Database Assign the complaintsto a team

  24. Activity 1 : Database The GPS steeredtask list on iPad

  25. Activity 1 : Database Changing the status of a complaint

  26. Activity 1 : Database • A GIS solution tobeused on rugged hand held palm tops • The peoplewhomaintain the recreationalnetwork have nowiPads on which a GIS solution is embedded. • Theycanadd new signpostingto the database, prepare the positioning of signposting, removesignposting, addtemporarysignposting in case of deviations … • Thiswork is done online in direct connectionwith the TRIS database

  27. Activity 1 : Database • A GIS solution : New signposting

  28. Activity 1 : Database • A GIS solution : New signposting

  29. Activity 1 : Database • A GIS solution : Managing signposting

  30. Activity 1 : Database • Portable hand-held device linkedto IT database system foruse in the field : • Everyvolunteergetsanbunique ID which is linkedtotheir part of the networkthey have tosuperviseandto the date on whichthey have to do this • Thisunique ID is usedto login to the TRIS database • In their part of the database theycan : • Report the complaints on their part of the network • Look up the updates of the status of theircomplaints • See the complaints of othervolunteers • Print the working map withtrajectsandsignposting on their part of the network. • All of these functionalities are usableon aniOS or on anandroid tablet
