During world war one Ernest Hemingway volunteered to be and ambulance for the red cross on the Italian front, but was sent home after sustaining injuries from shrapnel. Is first book, Three Stories and Ten Poems was published in 1923 while he was living in Paris, and was followed by the book In our Time. His time on the Italian front inspired his American debut book, A Farwell to Arms. His career later spanned through more wars including the Spanish Civil war and World war two. 3. For Whom The Bell Tolls Robert Jordan- An American who joins the international brigades to fight for the republic of Spain Pablo- The current leader of the republican resistance Pilar- The wife and 2nd in command of Pablo and the republicans Maria- A girl whom was captured by the Fascists and rescued prior to the current story, she is in love with Robert Jordan

  4. For whom the bell tolls • The story begins with Robert Jordan meeting with his small group of guerrillas, so that they may provide backup for his orders. He is ordered by his general to blow up a bridge that leads to a town that is vital to be captured so that the republican forces can stage an offensive. Robert Jordan meets up with Pablo, the current leader of the Guerillas, Pillar the woman of Pablo, Maria a rescued prisoner of the Fascists, and several other republican guerillas. They begin their journey to the bridge, but the farther they go, the more insubordinate Pablo become to Robert Jordan’s orders. As they continues their voyage to the bridge, Robert and Maria fall in love. As Pablo’s insubordination grows, so does the republican Guerillas Urge to Kill Pablo, until one night, Pablo steals the detonators to the explosives that they were to use to blow the bridge. The Republicans do not realize the detonators have been stolen until they wake up. When they wake up, they find that Pablo has a change of heart, but not before he had thrown the detonators into a river, fortunately the explosives could be detonated by grenade, so all was not lost. They all reach the bridge, but Robert is taken by the republican commander Andre Marty, but Robert is able to reach the General who assigned him to the mission, and is released to do his duty, despite the fact that they too late and the Fascist forces arrived over the bridge they were supposed to blow up.

  5. continued • Robert Jordan Blows up the bridge, at the cost of a few of his men. And in the end the Guerillas are riding on horseback to their caves, but Robert's horse breaks it’s leg and decides that he shall stay behind to hold off the Fascists.

  6. Personal Review • I found this book to be very good, but very hard to follow, He used Spanish in many sentences and old English when people were talking. Excellent plot, poor execution.
