  1. At these Post War Trials, known as the Nuremberg Trials,the remaining Nazis were brought to justice. 1945-1949

  2. Did you know? • Many Nazis left Germany and Nazi-occupied countries to avoid being brought to justice. Where was their favorite place to flee? Hundreds fled to Argentina in South America. • It is estimated that 42 other Nazis (besides Hitler) committed suicide when they found out that: • #1 Germany was going to lose the World War II. • #2 Hitler was dead.

  4. Location: Nuremberg, Germany (This was the same location as the Nazi rallies and the name for the infamous laws that took away Jewish rights.) The Palace of Justice

  5. Meet Robert Jackson, the Chief Prosecuter from the U.S.A.

  6. Meet the Judges and Alternates(from Allied countries during WWII) Left to right: John Parker, Francis Biddle, Alexander Volchkov, Iola Nikitchenko, Geoffrey Lawrence, Norman Birkett

  7. Meet the Nazi Defense Team A group of leading lawyers was hired by the court to defend the Nazi officers who could choose among them or request any other lawyer.

  8. Nazi Testimonies Were Heard Chief U. S. Prosecutor Robert Jackson and Uri Pokrovski, Assistant Soviet Prosecutor, listen with headphones to a defense summary.

  9. Meet the Defendants (or the Nazis on trial for crimes) Karl Doenitz • In charge of the German Navy • Chosen by Hitler to succeed him as fuhrer (negotiated surrender following Hitler's suicide) • Said… "I would rather eat dirt than have my grandson grow up in the Jewish spirit and faith"...Went on radio after assassination attempt on Hitler to call it "a cowardly attempt at murder."

  10. Hans Frank • Governor-general of Nazi-occupied Poland, called the "Jew butcher of Cracow." • In April of 1930, Hitler asked Frank to secretly investigate a rumor that he had Jewish blood.  Frank reported back that there was a 50/50 chance that Hitler was one-quarter Jewish.

  11. Wilhelm Frick • Knew that the insane, aged, and disabled were being systematically killed but did nothing to stop it  • Drafted, signed, and administered laws that got rid of political parties that were against the Nazis • Suppressed trade unions and Jews (using the infamous Nuremberg Laws)

  12. Hans Fritzsche • Head of the Radio Division (in Goebbel's Propoganda Ministry) whose radio broadcasts included strong Nazi propaganda

  13. Walther Funk • Agreed with Himmler to receive gold (including gold teeth and rings taken from those killed in concentration camps) and deposit in the Nazi Bank. • Funk told subordinates not to ask questions about the shipments.  He either knew or should have known the source of the gold received.

  14. Hermann Goering • Luftwaffe (Air Force) Chief; President of Reichstag; Director of "Four Year Plan." • As Director of the Four Year Plan, Goering bore responsibility for the elimination of Jews from political life and for the destruction and takeover of Jewish businesses and property. • He was quoted as saying, "I wish you had killed 200 Jews and not destroyed such valuable property."

  15. Rudolf Hess • Deputy to the Fuhrer and Nazi Party Leader who signed decrees persecuting Jews and was a willing participant in aggression against Austria, Czechoslavakia, and Poland.

  16. Alfred Rosenberg • His directives provided for the segregation of Jews in ghettos, facilitating their mass killing.  • He set quotas of laborers to be sent to the Reich.

  17. Julius Streicher (Hitler appears to his right.) • Anti-Semitic Editor of Der Sturmer who organized a boycott of Jewish businesses in 1933 and believed in the Nuremberg Decrees of 1935.  • In 1938 he arranged for demolition of a synagogue in Nuremberg and began to call for annihilation of the Jewish race.

  18. Baldur von Schirach • Subjected German youth to an extensive program of Nazi propaganda. (The children of the Hitler Youth are pictured above.) • Participated in the deportation of the Jews from Vienna
