  1. Public Policy Update:How you can make a difference Amanda Ihmels, RDN, LRD North Dakota Public Policy Coordinator

  2. Objectives • Participants will be able to list and briefly describe two topics of public policy • Participants will be able to speak to the importance of supporting nutrition policy

  3. Preventative Health Savings act • H.R. 2663/ S. 1422 • This bill allows for the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to score legislation to account for savings in prevention programs • Currently scores programs for 5-10 years and new bill allows for 30 year • This bill would allow for better CBO scoring for nutrition related bills.

  4. Treat and Reduce Obesity Act • TROA H.R. 2415/S.1184 • Allows RDs to treat obesity through intensive Behavioral Therapy (IBT) to Medicare • Authorizes coverage for FDA approved weight loss medications that complement IBT

  5. Older American Act • OAA H.R. 3850/S. 1028 • Provides nutritionally balanced meals to a vulnerable population • In FY 2010 provided 145.4 million congregate meals and 96.4 million home delivered meals. • Cost effective – the cost of one day in the hospital is roughly the same a providing one year of meals

  6. Why is this important • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywcGyZsMxiY&feature=youtu.be

  7. Why to get involved • Most elected leaders do not have a medical or health background. Most probably won’t know what a dietitian is or what a dietitian does. • Develop a relationship now so when it is time to call on our leaders we are not starting from the ground up. • Gain support for your passions • Give input on developing programs and legislation

  8. How to start • Respond to Action Alerts • Read Eat Right Weekly • Start locally at a city level or with healthy coalitions • Contact your state legislators • E-mail members of your public policy team with questions
