  3. Due Dates 1/21—Turn of the Screw • Seminar: Cards from everyone and Questions from those not presenting

  4. Discuss • Compare and contrast Macbeth’s view of life at the beginning and end of the play. • Compare and contrast the prophecies of the witches in Act I, scene 3 with the appearance of the apparitions in Act IV, scene • Discuss Lady Macbeth’s influence on Macbeth. • Demonstrate how a possible central theme of the play is Nature and Order versus The Unnatural and Chaos.

  5. Discuss • One of the important functions of the witches in Macbeth is to predict the future. Choose the prediction that most influences the plot development and explain how it was made, how it came true, and how it influenced the plot. • Hecate, the queen of the witches, says that a feeling of security is man’s greatest enemy. Discuss this statement by citing examples of this truth in the play and by analyzing their effects. • In all Shakespearean heroes, there is a “tragic flaw” or personality fault that may lead them on to their doom. Identify Macbeth’s tragic flaw and discuss how this flaw ultimately leads to his tragic downfall. In your discussion cite several examples to illustrate this tragic flaw. • Macbeth and Lady Macbeth reverse personality traits as the play progresses. Identify specifically their initial traits, then show how they reverse as the play continues.

  6. Discuss • Shakespeare understood human psychology. Discuss and evaluate this understanding behind the behavior of characters by using several examples. • Analyze the events that precipitated Lady Macbeth’s final move. Discuss their relationship to the ultimate outcome. • Select any symbol or any unifying device and trace its use throughout the play. (Suggestions: blood, birds, reality and illusion, sleep and sleeplessness, disease, night and darkness, disguise, clothing, plants.. you are not limited to these.)

  7. Discuss • To equivocate means “to use ambiguous expressions, especially to mislead.” Discuss equivocation as a theme in Macbeth, citing specific examples. Remember to make a FULL thematic statement. • Children play a major role in Macbeth, not only as actors but also in the imagery. Discuss their use in both of these ways. (Children, heirs, childbearing, parenthood, and childlessness.) • Discuss the use of irony in the play. You may isolate a scene and analyze it thoroughly.

  8. Write • For each slide, choose one question to develop a full thesis. • Once written, exchange and evaluate your partner’s thesis
