  1. Do Now!!  • List 5 things that are living and 5 things that are not living • What do the living things you listed have in common that separate them from the non-living things?

  2. Objectives • Identify the 4 unifying themes of Biology. • Explain what characteristics an organism must have to be considered alive.

  3. Unifying themes of Biology • 1. All living things share common characteristics • 2. All living things share common needs • 3. Living Things meet their needs through interactions with the environment • 4. The types and numbers of living things change over time

  4. 1) All Living Things Share Common Characteristics Unicellular • Small, hard to see • directly exchange nutrients and waste with environment Multicellular • Work together • cells have specialized jobs and work together to keep organism alive a) Made of 1 or more cells.

  5. Common Characteristics (cont.) b) Organized • All parts work together to take in nutrients and remove waste • Body plan allows it to survive in its environment

  6. Common Characteristics (cont.) c) Growth and Development *Cell division and cell differentiation*

  7. Common Characteristics (cont.) d) Responds to stimuli http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFDHWk_bjsU

  8. 2) All Living things share common needs. a) We need energy!! • Energy is the ability to do work. • The sun is the ultimate source of energy!

  9. Energy (cont.) • Can come from food and is converted into usable form, think calories • Energy moves along food web, only 10% of energy transferred to each level

  10. How do we get our energy? • Autotroph (Producers) • Heterotroph (Consumers)

  11. Common needs (cont.) Regulation of an organism’s internal conditions to maintain life Temperature Blood sugar levels B) Homeostasis: Blood Pressure

  12. Common needs (cont.) C) living space • Serves as protection • Sources of nutrients • Area to grow and develop

  13. All organisms need to Adapt Common needs (cont.) D) Adaptations: • characteristic of an organisms that allows it to better survive in its environment *Organisms within a species must adapt to changing environments or they will become extinct!!* Ex: A cheetah’s speed, camouflage, etc.

  14. Can you spot the adaptation in each picture?

  15. 3) Living Things meet their needs through interactions with the environment • A) Environment:everything that surrounds an organism. • Living factors (biotic factors) • Non-living factors (abiotic factors) • Ex: sunlight, temperature, climate, rocks, etc.

  16. Look at the following picture and list 3 abiotic factors & 3 biotic factors

  17. Interactions with the Environment (cont.) • B) Species Interactions-2 or more things affecting each other.

  18. Think-Pair-Share • Name at least 5 DIFFERENT interactions occurring in the following picture.

  19. Do Now • List 2 characteristics that all living things share. • List 2 needs that all living things share. • What is the scientific term for a living thing? Non-living?

  20. Imaginary Creature Project • Read the handout for instructions • Assignment will be due the next class. • You must make an ORIGINAL CREATURE!!

  21. Quiz • You will have a “quest” on MONDAY 9/26 • Review the study guide, your notes, the powerpoint on the website, and the jeopardy game to help you study. • We will do a quick lab tomorrow and then play jeopardy to review.
