  1. The Mouse Trap Josh Alfrey, Andrea Boyer, Philip Cutler, Don Hendrick

  2. The Group • Josh Alfrey– concept, designer, construction • Andrea Boyer – concept, journalist/editor • Philip Cutler – concept, calculations • Don Hendrick –concept, designer, supplier, calculations

  3. Device Design • Purpose: to display a Tennessee banner. • Materials used: wood, marbles, PVC pipes, funnel, mouse traps

  4. Calculations mgh = (1/2)mvf2 + (1/2)IW f2 mgh = (1/2)mvf2 + (1/2)((2/5)mr2) (v2/r2) gh = (1/2) vf2 + (1/5) v2 gh = (7/10) vf2 vf= [(10/7)(gh)] 1/2 vf= [(10/7)(32.2 ft/s2)(3.5 in)] ½ vf= 12.69 inches

  5. Calculations, cont. ∑T = I α r(F)(sin θ) = (1/3) mr2 α r(mg)(sin θ) = (1/3) mr2 α (g)(sin θ) = (1/3) r2 α α = [(3g)(sin θ)] / r = [(3)( 32.2 ft/s2)(sin(39.27))] / (15.5 in) α = 3.95 in/s2

  6. Issues • The string attached to the first mouse trap was too weak • Determining what device would be able to hold up the banner • The marble would fall out of the PVC pipes, so we needed to put a cap on the end • Making a way for the marble to hit the mouse trap when it fell out of the PVC pipes

  7. Conclusion • Trial and error is crucial in creating a device such as this • Teamwork plays a major factor in projects • This project allowed us to put everything that we learned in 151 to use
