  1. The 3D Experience Rhythm in Layers

  2. Assemblage Art – made up of preformed natural or manufactured materials which were not intended as art materials.

  3. Jean Dubuffet • The artistic origin of the word Assemblage can be traced to the 1950s, when Jean Dubuffet created a series of collages made from butterfly wings, titled Assemblages d’empreintes

  4. Other artists actually worked with found objects prior to Dubuffet Pablo Picasso

  5. And… Marcel Duchamp

  6. One of the earliest women to try her hand at Assemblage art was Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven Who really put herself into her work…literally

  7. And my personal favorite….. Louise Nevelson – who started creating her sculptures from found pieces of wood in the 1930s . She liked to refer to them as Sky Cathedrals.

  8. Assemblages are mainly (but not always) NON-OBJECTIVE works of art. Art with no recognizable subject matter

  9. Let’s take a look at some examples of Assemblage Art by an artist named Jeff Owens.

  10. Ruth Wurzburger is a British artist who currently creates Assemblage Art.

  11. “I believe art can be a valuable medium of expression, and hope to connect with people in a direct and emotive way using pure color to create an uplifting experience”. “My work consists of explorations in large canvases, and more recently mixed media wall assemblages which extends the color into 3D space”. She states…

  12. Emotive….what?????? • Causing or intending to cause emotion…. Oh ok, now you get it! 

  13. Ruth uses color to let her viewer’s feel emotions when viewing her work Ruth layers Colors and Shapes Sequentially to give Depth to her pieces.

  14. What does it mean to layer colors and shapes sequentially? Dark to Light…. Big to Small…

  15. For this project you will be using wood shapes and lots of color and patterns to create an Assemblage work of art! Some student examples…

  16. Important Information! If you wish to use additional materials for your Assemblage, start gathering them NOW! You will need them from the start of this process.

  17. MUST HAVES for this build…. Texture… Pattern… Sequential Colors…

  18. Also… Depth… Movement…(using Dowels) These are Dowels… and 1 Focal Point

  19. This student work has… Texture Pattern Sequential Color Depth Movement and 1 Focal Point

  20. Let’s Get Started… For Homework, Go online and find one example of each of the 5 Assemblage artists listed on your project sheet. They are: Jean Dubuffet Marcel Duchamp Pablo Picasso Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven and Louise Nevelson Print out 1 example of each of their Assemblage artwork and label each artwork with the artist’s name. You may also email me this homework.

  21. Next… On the back of your Rubric, create a large, detailed sketchof your final design for your Assemblage. Include color, texture, movement and pattern in your Design. Use the actual wooden shapes you chose for this project. Remember, your design should remain Non-Objective!

  22. Let’s see how you feel about Ruth Wurzburger’s Assemblage artwork. Study the artwork on page 1 of your Project Sheet. On the bottom (of the front) of your Rubric, write down what emotions you feel as you observe each piece. Did Ruth achieve her goal of an uplifting experience?

  23. “I believe art can be a valuable medium of expression, and hope to connect with people in a direct and emotive way using pure color to create an uplifting experience”. “My work consists of explorations in large canvases, and more recently mixed media wall assemblages which extends the color into 3D space”. She states…
