  2. Outline • GFZ Potsdam and Data Center • ISDC for geoscience data • Duties and Responsibilities in eGY • Status of eGY in Germany/Europe • Activities and Projects related to eGY • Further Objectives and Tasks eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  3. GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (1) • Biggest and most important German georesearch center • Covering all geoscience disciplines Geodesy and Remote Sensing Physics of the Earth Geodynamics Chemistry of the Earth Geoengineering eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  4. GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (2) • Own satellite missions (CHAMP, GRACE [with US], TerraSAR-X [with DLR], SWARM [with ESA]) • Big geoscience projects (GEOFONE, ICDP, CHAMP, …) • Infrastructure (Instruments, Data Center, Computing Center, …) • 750 employess (500 scientists) • Publicly funded (90% Bund, 10% Land Brandenburg) eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  5. GFZ Data Center • Research on information management and data exchange (metadata standards and ontologies, semantic web, metadata and data exchange mechanism, …) • Development of IT infrastructure applications and systems (ISDC + degree framework CWS [interoperability]) • Operation of data management services using information systems (ISDC) eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  6. ISDC for geoscience data (1) • Information System and Data Center (ISDC) for big geoscience projects • CHAMP/GRACE satellite mission • GPS time series data • Magnetic field data • Gravity field data • Atmospheric/Ionospheric data • Auxiliary data eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  7. ISDC for geoscience data (2) • Global Geodynmaic Project (GGP) • Superconducting Gravimeter Network data • GPS Reprocessing data (Orbits, ERP) • … => All metadata are available in the GCMD DIF standard (parent XML DIF + child XML/ASCII DIF) eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  8. isdc.gfz-potsdam.de eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  9. Duties and Responsibilities in eGY (1) • Member of European/German eGY Committee • Representing eGY at GEO meeting in Bonn, IPY opening Ceremony in Paris, … • Involved in the unique IAG Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) project eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  10. Duties and Responsibilities in eGY (2) • ISDC has been announced as system in GEOSS • EGU GI10 Convener (together with Peter Fox) “Informatics: distributed information systems - technology and applications” => 36 contributions • ISDC is selected as eGY showcase (AGU) eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  11. Status of eGY in Germany/Europe (1) • Very fragmented picture in Europe • Italy (Mauro), Russia, France, UK, … • In Germany at least eGY awareness at the GFZ Potsdam • eGY European Meeting (before EGU, 13-14 April 2007 in Potsdam) eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  12. Status of eGY in Germany/Europe (2) • EGU 2007 Vienna: eGY town hall meeting • IUGG 2007 Perugia: eGY official opening ceremony • 7th European framework program is linked to eGY objectives eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  13. Activities and Projects related to eGY • IAG Workshop in Potsdam on “real” networked global Gravity Field Services (connected to GGOS project) • IUGG Union session contribution “Geoscience information systems and interoperable catalog and data access services for global distributed gravity field data” eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  14. Further Objectives and Tasks (1) • Improve awareness of eGY and eGY objectives • Keep active in eGY in different ways • ISDC system in GEOSS • Close the gap between GFZ and DLR Earth observation data management in the sense of eGY eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  15. Further Objectives and Tasks (2) • Start of the IAG GGOS portal project • Improve the role of GGOS in the sense of a global networked information system in GEOSS • Join the WDC Directors Conference in Bremen as eGY representative? eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007

  16. Further Objectives and Tasks (3) • ISDC catalog interoperability by OGC/ISO WCS (degree framework) • ISDC data interoperability by OGC SWE concept (virtual observatory) • Providing thematic and ontology based metadata catalog search and access to tailored products (metadata + data) • Publication of data using DOI and/or URN • GFZ/ISDC IDN portal in CEOS eGY General Meeting, Boulder, 13-14 March 2007
