Gilead Compass Initiative®: Providing Effective Resources to Fight HIV Stigma HIV/AIDS has affected numerous people across the globe and has been declared an epidemic by the World Health Organization. As much as the disease has disrupted the lives of people, the stigma associated with the disease has made a greater impact. Instances of people losing their jobs, getting thrown out of their families, left on their own to fend for themselves show the damaging effects of HIV on the affected people. To make a viable society for the affected people and families, HIV stigma reduction is the only way. With proper training and awareness, the stigma can be combated to create better living conditions for the affected people. The biggest contribution that is currently made towards this is by the Gilead Compass Initiative® started by Gilead Sciences, Inc. to combat the HIV stigma. Gilead Compass Initiative® is one of the biggest steps put forward by the biopharmaceutical company in this direction to create a better living situation for HIV affected people and families. The initiative is a 10-year, $100 million commitment by the company to help several African American families in the Southern USA to fight the stigma. Under the initiative, they have established three COMPASS Coordinating Centers at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, the Southern AIDS Coalition, and University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. These coordinating centers are responsible to provide training to individuals and non- profit organizations, and businesses to reduce the stigma. The initiative is also responsible to provide grants to charitable organizations that are actively working towards providing resources to the affected families. Gilead Compass Initiative® aims at bringing sustainable changes in society by creating leaders, organizations, and communities who will work long-term in this direction. Amongst these Gilead HIV resource, the initiative also provides collaborative learning opportunities.
