Embrace the Process and the Core! • Sociological Explorations (Soc 230) • Wonder—become curious about something, pick potential topics • Review Literature—learn what others found out about your topics • Sociological Theory (Soc 300) • Review Literature—continue to learn what others have found out • Specify Question—state exactly what you are going to find out • Conceptualize—identify and define key concepts • Theorize—state how you believe concepts are related and explain why • Research Methods (Soc 340) • Review Literature—continue to learn what others have found out • Operationalize—specify your measures and develop the instruments and procedures you will use to obtain them • Hypothesize—state exactly how you expect your measures to be related • Observe—measure your concepts • Sociological Analysis (Soc 400) • Analyze—systematically compare how your measures are really related to how you predicted they would be related • Assess and Revise—reject or adjust your theory if predictions fail

Use Literature to Provoke Final Question • How does the literature answer your starter question? • What limitations (confusion, problems, debates, weaknesses, holes) exist in the literature? • Which questions could YOU ask that might solve, address, or clarify the issues in the literature? • Which question is your favorite? • Which question is doable?

Potential Limitations to Address • Unresolved ongoing empirical debates • Unresolved ongoing theoretical debates • Certain seemingly relevant variables have been ignored • Less effective or non-existent theoretical explanations • Effect of time or social change has not been accounted for • Some aspect of the topic has rarely if ever been studied • Research on the topic is outdated • Not enough research has been done on the topic • Some populations or groups haven’t been examined • Any other weakness or flaw you can identify
