  3. School Days & Family Life • Historians are not quite sure what school he went to but there is a lot of evidence that says he went to the Stratford grammar school • He started out in the petty school when he was about four where he learned how to read and write. • When he was older he moved on to “grade school” were he learned Latin literature and began to study the New Greek Testament. • Not much is known from his school life to his professional life in London. • He got married to Ann Hathaway and had 3 children when he was 18.

  4. Shakespeare’s Story • We can tell from his works that he was a “voracious” reader. • He was very wealthy. • “Until the late eighteenth century, the William Shakespeare who lived in most biographies was the creation of legend and tradition.” • Queen Elizabeth demanded that Shakespeare write a play for her that was to be finished in 14 days. • Shakespeare reached the top of his acting career by playing the role of many ghosts in the play, Hamlet and Adam in As You Like It.

  5. Working Life • Spent his working time in the London theatre world • By the early 1590s, he established himself a professional playwright • Enjoyed achieving success in not only playwriting, but also as an actor and shareholder in a acting company • Sometime during the years of 1610 and 1613, he is thought to have “retired from the stage” • After he retired he returned home to Stratford. Shortly after returning he passed away in 1616 • After his death two memorials of Shakespeare are considered creditable: an engraving in the 1623 First Folio, and Shakespeare’s memorial bust at Holy Trinity Church in Stratford.

  6. Success In London • “By 1592 Shakespeare had achieved some prominence in London as both an actor and a playwright.” • Shakespeare, in 1593, became a published poet. • In 1593, he published Venus and Adonis, and in 1594, The Rape of Lucrece. • Both were long narrative poems. • When he published these poems, it was during the times the theaters were closed due to a disease. • Shakespeare began a service as an acting-company shareholder when the theaters reopened in late 1594. • “In the 1590s, he wrote his plays on English history as well as several comedies and at least two tragedies (Titus Andronicus and Romeo and Juliet).” • Many of Shakespeare’s sonnets are assumed to be written in the 1950’s, but they weren’t published until 1609.

  7. Success In London (Cont.) • “In 1599, Shakespeare's company built a theater for themselves across the river from London, naming it the Globe.” • Many of his popular plays were written while he was in the theater. • Many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed for people of high authority. • “Otherwise, his plays from 1599 to 1608 were, so far as we know, performed only at the Globe.” • For the new indoor Blackfriars Theater he wrote many new plays. • This was during the years of 1608-1612. • After the year of 1612, Shakespeare slowed down with his writing and wrote very little. • The Globe caught on fire and completely burned to the ground in 1613 during the play of Henry VIII.

  8. The Final Years • Between 1610 and 1613 he returned to Stratford very wealthy. • His father John was rewarded with the Coat of Arms. • Died April 13, 1616. • The Holy Trinity Church Made a bust of him. • Buried April 25, 1616

  9. Questioning Shakespeare’s Authorship • Some people believe that Shakespeare couldn’t have written all of his works by himself.

  10. An Expansive Age • Shakespeare wrote in an age where newly translated Greek and Roman classics became popular. • The readings spoke of different viewpoints from different parts of the world. • Thus, Shakespeare wrote Hamlet which captured the newly found interests of the people. • Exploration and Discovery was also at a peak during Shakespeare’s time. • Geographical and scientific discoveries were made that, in addition to the Greek and Roman writings, changed viewpoints.

  11. London • In London many advancements were made that completely altered the city and its importance. • It changed to the political, economic, and entertainment center of England. • Many English residents would travel to London seeking a lifestyle change.
