  1. International Heliophysical Year European Section

  2. General Context • Commemorate the 50th anniversary of the International Geophysical Year • Other programs: • International Polar Year (IPY) • Earth climate studies from the polar regions • International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) • “The largest database of information about the past and present status of planet Earth that has ever existed” • Electronic Geophysical Year (eGY) • “to focus effort on a 21st Century e-Science approach to issues of data stewardship: open access to data, data preservation, data discovery, data rescue, capacity building, and outreach. The development of Virtual Observatories and Laboratories is a central feature of eGY “

  3. IHY Overview • Share costs and resources • Coordinated use of facilities many of which are unique • Fosters cooperation in space physics • Most science for dollar invested • Maximum public outreach • Cross-cutting solar system research • Global study • Requires broad range of scientific disciplines • “Heliophysics” Objectives • Understand the processes and drivers which affect the terrestrial environment and climate • Global study of the Sun-heliosphere system outward to the heliopause • Foster international cooperation in space science • Communicate results to the public UNIVERSAL PROCESSES

  4. THEME 1 Evolution and Generation of Magnetic Structures and Transients • Topics included in Theme 1: • Flux Ropes-Filaments • Current Sheets • Cellular Structures • Turbulence • Waves & Emissions • Solar (Stellar) Flares • CMEs • Substorms • Bursty Bulk Flows Solar Photosphere Stratified Plasma Turbulence in the Earth Magnetosphere

  5. Theme 2 Energy Transfer and Coupling Processes Comparative aeronomy and cross-disciplinary studies of energy transfer processes • Topics relevant to Theme 2 include: • Sudden energy release • Reconnection, Diffusion • Wave/Particle interactions • Heating mechanisms • Acceleration mechanisms • Charge Exchange • Ionization & Recombination • Aurorae • Parallel Electric Field Mechanisms • MHD Instabilities & Microinstabilities • Dynamic Pressure & Buoyancy Effects Solar wind collisionless plasma Solar atmosphere Planetary Aurorae

  6. Theme 3 Flows and Circulations Transport of Magnetic flux • Topics included in Theme 3: • Shears • Vortices and spirals • Outflows • Dynamos • Convection • Turbulent flows • Non-adiabatic expansion Ring Current with Earth superimposed

  7. Theme 4 Boundaries and Interfaces • Topics included in Theme 4: • Sheaths • Layered interfaces • Shocks Planetary Bow shock Shock wave on the solar surface Interplanetary shock

  8. Theme 5 Synoptic Studies of the 3-D Coupled Solar-Planetary-Heliospheric System

  9. IHY: International Organization

  10. Steering Committee • J.L. BOUGERET (Chair) France • C. Briand (co-chair) France • J.A. Bonet Navarro Spain • A. Breen United Kingdom • M. Candidi Italy • K. Georgieva Bulgary • R. Harrison United Kingdom • R. Marsden (ESA) • B. Schmieder France • R. von Steiger Switzerland

  11. Goal • Information about the IHY activities • Stimulate the creation of national/regional working teams • Bring out the common scientific interests of all national/regional working teams • Help isolated groups/scientists

  12. H. Lundstedt F: Jansen W. Macek P. Gallager F. Farnik R. Harrison K. Kudela V. Rusin S. Poedts H. Rucker B. Schmieder K. Georgieva D. Maia A. Ozguc A. Nindos J. Rodrigez Pacheco K. Kecskemety A. Benz E. Antonucci National Committees B. Andersen M. Carlson J. Torsti

  13. National Coordinators role • A link between the European Steering Committee and the National Researchers • Information transfer • Identify specific requirements • Stimulate/Coordinate the activities to IHY • Coordinate the actions towards the national agency to get funds

  14. How can I participate ? • Subscription on the IHY web site: http://ihy.gsfc.nasa.gov/get_involved.shtml • Contact your National Coordinator • Propose a Coordinated Investigation Program • Join an existing CIP

  15. CIP’s • Propose • A researcher proposes activities with specific science goals, requiring multiple resources not necessarily under her control using the UK web page. • Coordinate • IHY Discipline Planners review the proposal to co-ordinate with other CIPs and to link the proposer with representatives for instruments, observatories, and models. The Proposer and facility representatives arrange the details of observation modes, schedules etc. and do the work. • Review • IHY Universal Process Workshop Planners identify relevant CIPs to start planning summary workshops. These will happen towards the end of 2007 and into 2008, and provide forums for drawing together and reviewing the results from IHY science.

  16. Already proposed CIP
