  3. Mission • Develop graduate-level systems engineering programs at the University of Minnesota • Joint Development by: • INCOSE North Star Chapter • University of Minnesota Center for the Development of Technological Leadership

  4. Status • Draft proposal describing Masters Degree program developed for internal University of MN review • New Leadership within University of MN Center for the Development of Technological Leadership • Re-write of the proposal needed to define certificate and master degree programs at the Graduate School • Presentation developed for soliciting corporate support • Systems Engineering Certificate defined in University of MN College of Continuing Education (CEE) • Proposal submitted for state funding for CEE to develop SE Overview courses for use at Lockheed Martin Tactical Systems

Upcoming Activities • Meet with University of MN participants to develop strategy for systems engineering program implementation • Program champion at University of MN desperately needed • Initial program offering in Fall of 2003 • Develop plan of action and milestones • Certificate program • Masters Degree program • Continue to solicit company support for programs We Can Use Your Help!

Program Requirements • Provide an advanced education at the professional master’s level that specifically addresses the knowledge and skills required to design, develop, and implement successful, large-scale, complex systems • Develop Systems Engineering graduate programs through a cooperative approach between the University of Minnesota and local companies • Provide a cost-effective systems engineering curriculum that can be tailored to meet the needs of practicing systems engineers

Systems Engineering Programs • Systems Engineering Certificate • Focuses on Systems Engineering Discipline • 5 Systems Engineering Courses - 15 semester credits • Masters Degree in Systems Engineering • Focuses on Systems Engineering Discipline, as well as other technical and soft skills necessary to implement the Systems Engineering discipline • 30 credits required • 5 Systems Engineering Certificate Courses - 15 credits • Systems Engineering Capstone Project - 3 credits • Other degree-related courses - 12 credits • 6 - 9 additional credits in an area of concentration (optional) • Domain knowledge in one or more areas

Systems Engineering Courses • Systems Engineering Management • Introduces techniques for the successful management of the development of technical systems • Focuses on methods of systems life-cycle analysis and planning, systems management, and systems integration • Topics Include: • Project Planning, Initiation, Monitoring, and Control • Proposal Management • Project Metrics and Reporting, including Earned Value Analyses • Stakeholder Involvement through Integrated Product Teams • Risk Management • Configuration Management • Quality Management • Security • Program Reviews

Systems Engineering Courses • Systems Engineering Practices I • The first of two courses which focus on the successful development of complex systems-of-systems • Topics include: • Systems Engineering Methodologies • Functional decomposition • Structured analysis • Object-oriented techniques • Requirements Development • Writing quality requirements • Operations analysis and requirements elicitation • Requirements analysis and issue resolution • Validation of stakeholder requirements • Requirements management • Systems Analysis • Reliability, Maintainability, Availability, Testability • Safety, Security, Vulnerability, Survivability • Human Factors/Human Computer Interface (HCI)

Systems Engineering Courses • Systems Engineering Practices II • The second of two courses which focus on the successful development of of complex systems-of-systems • Topics include: • Systems Design • Requirements synthesis • Model-based design • Systems architectural design • Logical and physical systems architecture development • Systems Integration, Verification, and Validation • Development of integration strategies • Verification testing • Validation of stakeholder requirements • Systems Deployment, Support, and Disposal • Systems deployment • Systems installation and user training • Systems logistical support • Systems disposal
