  1. Setting in Avatar Directed by James Cameron

  2. Camerashots/angles/movements In the military base: • Many camera movements, angles and shots are used throughout the settings of this film. For example a handheld camera is used when the soldiers first arrive on Pandora, to show a mechanical feel, there a also low angle shots used on the machinery to show that it is more powerful than the humans and the natives. In the Na’vi Forest: • Where as in the Na’vi forest, there are pan movements used to highlight the nature and to create a feeling of calmness of the environment.

  3. Colours (Filters) • In the RDA corporate base, dull filters are used to show a cold sterile environment, for example a harsh blue and grey colour, which represents no life, no trees and living nature. • In the Na’vi forest, blue filters are used, there are shades of blue, green, pink and purple, soft tone colours that create a peaceful feel of the Na’vi forest.

  4. Sounds • In the RDA corporation base, a non diegetic sound is used to create mechanical sounds of the machines, and engines moving. There is also a lot of diegetic sounds like the military slang and dialogue used by the soldiers. For example: Quaritch insists that the “ Na’vi are savages that kill mindlessly” • In the Na’vi forest, a lot of diegetic sound is used like ambience (nature) sounds which are peaceful and calming, also dialogue is used by the Na’vi, their own language. Soundtrack is added when Neytiri is teaching Jake the Na’vi ways, music is added in the background.

  5. Lighting • The lighting in the RDA corporation base is mostly artificial and there is very little natural light, there is a use of sterile, harsh grey lighting. The lighting is low key, and the only source of light is from light bulbs and electronics. Low key lighting is often used to show a threat, and to show that the situation is intense and serious. • Where as in the forest of Pandora, all the lighting is natural, and comes from the nature, and the living that are in their environment. The lighting is soft and high key, to show that the environment is peaceful and calm. The Na’vi have biological connections with their nature.

  6. Props • In the RDA corporation base, they use machinery, fire arms, explosives as their weapons. Aircrafts and robots are used as their main transport. Also the clothing used in the corporation base is synthetic, mass produced material which is dull, black and grey colours which again represents the sterile environment and the sense of no care for nature and environment. • Where as in the Na’vi forest, the Na’vi use bows and arrows and knives as their weapons. They also use ikrans and horse like creatures for their transport. The native Na’vi people, wear very little clothing such as beads and feathers and body paint. These materials are found in nature and the environment showing how connected the Na’vi people are with their home.
