  2. ‘Technology has become an essential tool for doing mathematics in today’s world’ (Niess, p 3).

  3. What is technology? • Introduction Technology is defined as “any invention, including tools, machines, materials, techniques, and sources of power, that makes people’s work easier” (Discovery school, 2012).

  4. Calculators • Computers • Laptops/netbooks • Smart boards • I-Pads/Tablets • I-phone/Pods/Smart phone • Internet Which technologies make useful tools forlearning and communicating mathematics in the 21st century?

  5. ‘Technology can facilitate mathematical problem solving communication, reasoning and proof; moreover technology can provide students with opportunities to explore different representations of mathematical ideas and support them in making connections both within and outside of mathematics’. (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000) . ‘The influence of play on a child’s development is enormous’ (Booker, 2010).

  6. Should students have an understanding of the mathematical concepts /strategies before use of the technology? Technology is only as good as the person who operates it.

  7. VELS: Level 1 Students ‘manipulate and play with objects to develop links between their immediate environment, everyday language and mathematical activity’. With assistance, ‘students work with different types of data, such as text, numbers and images. They develop their navigation skills by responding to stimulus in multimedia resources that develop literacy and numeracyskills’.

  8. A Smart-Board is made up of a computer, Smart-Board software, an interactive whiteboard and a projector. ‘Children who are shy tend to become engaged in learning when it comes to working with Smart-Boards’. Sani, 2007 http://www.topmarks.co.uk/

Upper Primary VELS Mathematics - Level 5 Learning focus As students work towards the achievement of Level 5 standards in Mathematics, they construct mathematical models to explore and describe the physical world. They recognise the importance of mathematics in a technological society. Students use technology such as graphic calculators, spreadsheets, dynamic geometry software and computer algebra systems for a range of mathematical purposes including numerical computation, graphing, investigation of patterns and relations for algebraic expressions, and the production of geometric drawings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-DiNRvWGl8

The system consists of the software, a receiver, and a clicker which allow faculty to provide students with opportunities to engage more actively and openly within a course.

  12. Middle Secondary TECHNOLOGY IS PART OF THIS WORLD AND TEACHERS ARE USING CALCULATORS AND ICT’s TO PROMOTE DEEPER AND MORE EFFECTIVE MATHEMATICAL THINKING RATHER THAN PRODUCING STUDENTS WHO CAN ONLY COPE WITH ROUTINE PROBLEMS FROM THE PAST. (Booker et al., 2010)

On Demand Testing link • On Demand Testing is an online resource for teachers to use when, where and how they choose. • Tests are designed to link to curriculum and standards. • Both general ability tests and topic-specific assessments are provided. • Can be administered to a single student and/or a whole class. • The On Demand testing program utilises the VCAA Assessment Online software.

Can the technology be used as a productivity, communication, research and or problem-solving and decision-making tool for learning in the subject area? • Can the technology address the diverse needs of students in learning the subject? • Can the technology provide multiple perspectives for the students to view of mathematics? • Can the technology maximize student learning? • What preparation must be provided for students working with the technology as a tool for learning? • How will assessment of students’ learning of mathematics be affected by the incorporation of the new tool?
