Toole of Helena became the first governor of the state Montana . • Historical fact: Then silver was discovered in rock ledges of Butte Hills.

Places to visit. • Bannock : near Dillon, has been preserved to look as it did in 1865, when it was one of the nation's richest gold camps. • National parks: A number of national forests lie either entirely or partly in Montana. The largest of these forests are Beaverhead-Deerlodge, Flathead, Gallatin, Kootenai, Lewis and Clark, and Lolo. The others are Bitterroot, Custer, Deerlodge, Helena, and Kaniksu.

  9. Additional facts! • Montana's first schools were started in mining camps in early 1860s . They had private teachers who charged tuition. • In late 1900s: 1972, Montana voters narrowly approved a new state constitution. • The states grain and meat were in demand, and its copper and other metals were used in the effort.
