  1. Facebook

  2. From the Poynter Institute: “News organizations are catching on that Facebook is becoming a major part of young users' Internet habits. They are meeting young readers -- a traditionally low-readership demographic-- on our virtual stomping grounds. And it's paying off.”

  3. Tout stories Most just use Facebook to tout stories that will direct fan to the company’s main page. Some do it with at least some attempt at “conversation”: See Roanoke Times

  4. Start conversations Note the comments (and conversations within these comments) that pop up on larger pages like The New York Times and ABC News

  5. Soliciting comments See Richelle Carey from HLN’s Facebook page

  6. The Facebook dilemma http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=2&aid=172145 And • “Verify, verify, verify. Facebook is a great source for story ideas, but no news story should be solely-sourced through social media,” Kirtley said. “Seek corroboration. And if at all possible, interview the person either by phone or face-to-face. It is so easy to lie on the Internet, and to misrepresent oneself. No journalist wants to spread falsehoods or be taken in by a hoax.” • “Most news organizations realize how valuable social networking can be, both as a newsgathering tool and as a way to promote the news organization’s ‘brand.’ The trick is to accommodate the competing interests without stifling the exchange of ideas. It’s not an easy task.”

  7. Creating pages: anyone can create a “page” to promote a product, service, business, organization or person. This is a great way to get visibility in the Facebook community.

  8. Monitor for reaction Facebook is becoming a space for people to “respond” or “announce.” See how Palin responded to Newsweek via Facebook

  9. Also a way to organize See how TSC parents fought back with a Facebook page

  10. Response and interactivity How are companies using Facebook? Kohl’sand Susan G. Komen
