  4. Attendance/ Tardies • School starts at 7:35 • Do not use school days for vacations. • Bring a doctor’s note if you have an appointment during the school day. • We lose federal money when students are absent. • Of course, if a child is sick with a fever or throwing up, keep them at home!

  5. Communications • Conduct chart- look at chart when it comes home Wednesdays and sign only on Wednesdays. Assignments not completed will be written on bottom of chart. • Red communication folder will have all papers sent from school. • http://bush5thgrade.wikispaces.com/ • Email is the best way to communicate.   6. Conferences • 1:15 pm - 1:55 pm • We meet for conferences as a team. Because of the high volume of students we have, we must limit conferences to 15 min. We try to schedule 2 conferences per planning period. • Many questions or concerns can be answered via email. • Email your child’s homeroom teacher to set up a conference.

  8. 5th Grade Needs • Turtle Store donations: mechanical pencils, gel pens, toys, stuffed animals, books, games, crafts, sport equipment etc… • Individual Teacher classroom wish items • Volunteers for Turtle Store, Holiday party and EOY party- contact Erica Riddle (Hunter’s mom)

  9. Language Arts • Spelling Test are on Friday. • Spelling work will be done in class as a warm-up. • Handwriting once a week.

  10. Reading • Reading all genres • Literature based • Focus on increasing vocabulary • More Reader’s Theater • Increased use of figurative language

  11. Science • Physical Science • Properties • Matter • Electricity • Magnetism • Earth Science • Landforms • Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition • Phases of the moon • Planets • Life Science • Life cycles • Adaptations • Biomes

  12. Math • HISD curriculum follows the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). The math textbook is used as a resource. All students have an assigned textbook to keep at home for the year. • In 5th grade, we focus on math fluency. • Weekly quiz on Friday covering skills learned week after week • Nightly homework practices skill learned daily • We also focus on problem solving skills with non routine problems. • We will learn one strategy every 1-2 weeks. The tests will be cumulative. Tests will be announced 3-5 days in advance. • One extension menu is completed every grading period. • The menu items are completed at school after class work is complete or can be taken home if desired. • The menu is worth one test grade.

  13. Social Studies • US History – Colonial Times, American Revolution, Civil War • We will learn the states and capitals. • We will also learn the Presidents. • Other topics will include economics, geography and citizenship.
