  2. What is “Lanca dei Francesi” case study? The case study “LancadeiFrancesi” is a project regarding a site of quarrying activity. Starting from the experience of the Emilia-Romagna Region and Province of Parma, we want to project and test a new method of post-quarry restoration that will be used to recreate a new natural equilibrium and a high level of social acceptance This experience will contribute to defining operational guidelines (SARMa) and recommendations for industry and government

  3. Description of location BSR 1: Geographical Coordinates: Y 45°01’ 30.2’’ X 10° 11’ 0.0’’ Municipality : Roccabianca Province : Parma Region : Emilia-Romagna Distance and direction to settlements: Roccabianca 2,5 Km S-E Zibello 3,5 Km S-W “Lanca dei Francesi” Parma Parma Province

  4. “Lanca dei Francesi” Environmental features (BSR 5): “Lanca dei Francesi” is located in the plain of Parma Province, next to the Po river. The area is surrounded by many Sites of Community Importance (SIC) and Special Protection Area (ZPS). This is a very important area for its ecological peculiarities and biodiversity features. Po River Biodiversity features (BSR 1): The specific “Biological diversity” is related to the presence of typical flora and fauna of the Po plain. A LIFE project is being starting and is aimed at enhancing the environment and reducing the threats to local bio-diversity Geological setting (BSR 2): Due to the presence of the PO river, the local lithostratimetric system is characterized by an alternated sequence of (mainly) sand and clay layers.

  5. Description of pilot sites: Lanca dei Francesi quarryBSR 3. Operational and market characteristicsActual Situation Peculiarities: The quarry is located within the Po River overbanks, in a flat land occasionally submerged during river floods. The quarry started to operate in 2003. The amount extracted during five years was:1.000.000 m3 of sand and 290.000 m3 of clay. The extraction was made by digging machines. The sand goes to the local or provincial market. The quarry doesn’t produce wastes The operational status (BSR 1): The quarry is almost completed and its enlargement is planned. The enlargement plan will involve additional 1.250.000 m3 of sand 250.000 m3 of clay over the next 5 years.

  6. Description of pilot sites: Lanca dei Francesi quarryBSR 8. Best practices approachThe new project Starting from the present situation RER, Parma Province and the quarry Company designed a project with the following objectives: - to minimize the environmental and social impacts of the quarry; - to rebuild a natural near-fluvial area with: a lake, tourist-ecological routes, low-impact farming. A good restoration project needs an appropriate digging project

  7. The digging project PO river Sinuous shores Lowest digging depth : 0 - 2 m from surface Highest digging depth : 12 m from surface Subdivision of digging activity in annual lots

  8. The restoration project PO river Woods and riparian woods Wetland and marshy areas Reintroduction of rare plants Reed beds Perimeter fences and hedges Floating Island • BSR 8. Best practices approach: • landscape remediation • environmental remediation • social acceptance Bird watching areas - educational paths and boxes for fauna observation

  9. riparian woods re-establishment, reed beds and marshy areas marshy areas and small lakes: towards the reconstruction of a wet near-fluvial ecosystem in the Po area

  10. Reintroduction of rare autochthonous plants Nymphaea alba Trapa natans Nuphar luteum Astoni di salice Leucojum aestivum Iris pseudacorus Butomus umbellatus

  11. Devices for the reintroduction of rare plants Bio Haven Floating Island System

  12. The proposed work plan of the pilot site activities * The monitoring will consist of design objectives compliance verification through field survey and monthly reports.
