    2. BACKGROUND THE HEALTH PROMOTING SCHOOLS CONCEPT INTRODUCED IN THE PROVINCE IN 1997/1998 THE PROVINCE EXPERIENCED A DECLINE IN HPS ACTIVITIES DURING THE PAST YEARS DUE TO RE-STRUCTURING

Limpopo Province is situated in the Northern part of South Africa and is made up of 5 districts and 26 municipalities namely:- Limpopo shares international borders with Botswana,Zimbabwe,Mozabique.Total population of 5,668,602 .Bushbuckridge municipality of Bohlabela district is now Mpumalanga and Maruleng Municipality is now part of Mopani District.

    4. CRITERIA FOR SELECTING SCHOOLS THE WHO GUIDELINES ON HPS WERE USED STRENGTH BASED APPROACH PROBLEM BASED APPROACH (SCHOOLS WITH CHALLENGES)

    5. STATISTICS THE PROVINCE HAS THE FOLLOWING NUMBER OF SCHOOLS: PRIMARY SCHOOLS 2826 HIGH SCHOOLS 1436 GRAND TOTAL 4262

    7. OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABILITY OF HPS IMPLEMENTATION PLAN ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS FOR CAPACITY BUILDING AND SUPPORT NEW ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE RESENTLY APPROVED WILLINGNESS BY SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE HPS PROGRAMME

    8. CHALLENGES NO DEDICATED STAFF TO DRIVE HPS AT DISTRICT AND SUB - DISTRICT LEVEL INADEQUATE BUDGET ALLOCATION LACK OF BUY – IN AND SUPPORT OF HPS DISTRICT MANAGERS FRAGMEMTED STRUCTURE AT DISTRICT AND POOR INTERSECTORAL COLLABORATION POOR OR LACK OF BASIC INFRASTRUCTURE IN MAJORITY OF SCHOOLS

    9. FUTURE PLANS APPOINTMENT OF DEDICATED HPS PROMOTERS TO DRIVE THE PROGRAMME DEDICATED BUDGET FOR HPS CAPACITY BUILDING FOR BOTH IMPLEMENTORS AND ROLE PLAYERS STRENGTHEN INTERSECTORAL COLLABORATION ASSIST WITH ADVOCACY FOR INFRASTURAL DEVELOPMENT
