  1. Do Now • What are some things you look for when you proofread your essays before submission other than grammar and punctuation?

  2. Objective for today  • SWBAT evaluate sentence structure in order to identify and modify active and passive sentences.

  3. Write what I do! • Create a sentence about what I did and begin the sentence with my name. • Create a sentence about what I did and begin the sentence with the keys.

  4. Active vs. Passive voice • Active Voice: the subject is doing the action. - example: "Steve loves Amy." Steve is the subject, and he is doing the action: he loves Amy, the object of the sentence. • Passive Voice: When the subject sits there letting something else do something to it. the target of the action gets promoted to the subject position. - ex: Instead of saying, "Steve loves Amy," I would say, "Amy is loved by Steve." The subject of the sentence becomes Amy, but she isn't doing anything. Rather, she is just the recipient of Steve's love. The focus of the sentence has changed from Steve to Amy.

  5. Let’s try just a couple more • I ate the cake. • Active or Passive? How do you know? • The mail was delivered by the postman. • Active or Passive? How do you know? • Janet cooked a big turkey for dinner. • Active or Passive? How do you know? • All of the presents were left under the tree by Santa. • Active or Passive? How do you know? • Can you rewrite these in their opposite form?

  6. Bell Work • Please write two sentences in active voice. • Please write two sentences in passive voice.

  7. Lets work on some activities for active and passive voice • A few vocab terms you will see in the activities: - Clause: clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb

  8. Bell Work • Re-read the worksheet handed out to you about passive/active voice. • Which voice (passive or active) is more appropriate to use? • Why? • When might you use the other form? Why?

  9. Classwork • Get with your assigned group. • We will be completing the packet as a group, ONE Activity at a time. • Make sure you are listening to my directions.

  10. Categorizing • We use a lot of words that sometimes get used incorrectly because we do not truly realize what they should be categorized under. • Categorize the words given to you and your partner under the following categories: • Location words • Time • Compare • Contrast • Emphasis • Conclude • Adding info • Clarify
