  2. TO COMPARE Comparing means finding the similarities AND the differences. • Similarities are things that are the same for the two items being compared • Differences are things that differ for the two items being compared

  3. FIRST – KNOW YOUR TOPIC • You need to know about each item that you are comparing to be able to compare and contrast them fully.

  4. WHAT ARE THEY? Figure out what classification applies to both items (country, religion, empire, social structure, labor system, constitutions, etc.) because you cannot use this as a similarity. • For example if you are asked to compare an apple and an orange, as they are both fruit you cannot use that as a similarity. • Likewise if you are comparing the Haitian and French revolutions, you cannot use the fact that they are both revolutions as a similarity.

  5. DESCRIBE EACH – List Characteristics ORANGE APPLE • Orange Red • Spherical Irregular Shape • Juicy Sometimes juicy • Segmented Core • Inedible Peel Edible Peel • Smooth surface Indented surface

  6. PICK YOUR 3 STRONGEST COMPARISONS – NEED AT LEAST 1 SIMILARITY & A DIFFERENCE • Pick your 3 (at least) strongest bases of comparison for your thesis statement. (These will often be the broadest and most universal categories.) The characteristics become your supporting evidence in the body of your essay (appearance, taste, internal structure).

  7. WRITE YOUR COMPARISONS • Write a similarity and a difference (two sentences max ideally) for apples and oranges. • These should be sentences that would be a topic sentence, so statements that can be elaborated upon further in your paragraph.

  8. APPLES AND ORANGES • There are similarities and differences between apples and oranges. • Apples and oranges are similar and different in appearance, taste and interior structures. • Oranges and apples have different appearances. • Oranges have a different appearance than apples which include different colors, sizes and shapes. • Apples and oranges are different, oranges contain citrus. • Oranges are more juicy and contain more citrus than apples which are somewhat juicy and contain minimal citrus.

APPLES AND ORANGES • Apples and oranges are both grown on trees. • Apples and oranges are similar in how they are cultivated. • Apples and oranges are similar in that both fruits can be made into juice. • Apples and oranges are similar in that they can both be consumed in a variety of ways including directly, as juice, in baked goods. • Apples and oranges are probably different in their interior structure. • Apples and oranges differ in their interior structure including organization and texture.
