What is Stress?

  • Your body’s physical response to changes that go on around you.


The 2 types of stress

Distress

Stress that is negative and can cause illnesses

Causes feelings such as anxiety, fear, sadness, depression.


Examples of distress

Examples of Distress:

  • A death in the family

  • Divorce

  • Failing a test

  • Moving to a new home/school

  • Giving a speech

Eustress

Positive stress, stress that can help you reach your peak potential.

Causes feelings such as excitement, joy, happiness


Examples of eustress

Examplesof Eustress:

  • Graduation

  • Going on a roller coaster

  • Making a team at school

  • Getting good grades

  • Going on vacation

What is a stressor?

Anything that causes stress.

Stressors can be negative or positive.


What is a defense mechanism

What is a Defense Mechanism?

A way that people mentally deal with stress.

When people make excuses or blame others instead of admitting they are just stressed out about a situation.


Physical ways to deal with stress

Physical ways to deal with Stress:

Negative:

  • Smoking cigarettes

  • Drinking alcohol

  • Doing drugs

  • Bullying

  • Fighting

  • Makes you really strong

  • Stops you from feeling pain

  • Helps you think clearly

  • Helps erase traumatic memories

The body releases glycogen, the body’s form of stored sugar.

Glycogen gives the body a back-up supply of energy.
