    4. What is rate? Always involves how slowly or how fast something moves or happens

    5. Displacement Quantities Linear Mechanical systems- distance Rotational mechanical systems angle Fluid system Volume or mass Electrical system charge Thermal system heat energy

    7. How is rate used? Speed of light = 300 million m/s Drill bit = 3 in/min Speed limit = 55mph

    8. How is mechanical motion related to rate? SPEED describes how fast an object moves Speed is a scalar quantity (doesnt tell direction)

    10. Velocity Used to describe an objects magnitude and direction (vector quantity)

    15. How do you calculate linear speed? Given: An automobile travels 250 feet east in 10 seconds at a constant speed Find: a. The speed of the automobile b. The velocity of the automobile

    16. How do you calculate linear speed? Given: An automobile travels 250 feet east in 10 seconds at a constant speed Find: a. The speed of the automobile b. The velocity of the automobile

    21. Given: Dan walks 2 miles to school in 20 minutes. He then runs home in 12 minutes. Find: Dans speed to school in mph. Dans speed home in mph.

    22. Given: Dan walks 2 miles to school in 20 minutes. He then runs home in 12.

    23. Given: Dan walks 2 miles to school in 20 minutes. He then runs home in 12.

    24. 6mph + 10 mph = 16 mph Divided by 2 = an average of 8 mph

    25. Given: Dan walks 2 miles to school in 20 minutes. He then runs home in 12.

    26. Be careful that the average speed and velocity does NOT equal the average value of the speeds We must divide the total distance by the total time in order to find the average speed

    27. Given: Dan walks 2 miles to school in 20 minutes. He then runs home in 12.

    28. Given: Dan walks 2 miles to school in 20 minutes. He then runs home in 12.

    29. Given: You travel 50 miles east in a half an hour and then 50 miles west at the same speed ending in at the same point you started Find: Your speed Find: Your average velocity

    30. Given: You travel 50 miles east in a half an hour and then 50 miles west at the same speed ending in at the same point you started Find: Your velocity Find your average velocity

    38. Speed versus time for a trip (Not distance vs. speed)
