  1. Mission October 23 2009 Your mission, should you choose to accept it…

  2. Mission October 23 2009 The United States Government has decided that we must lead by example on the issue of climate change and atmospheric CO2 I was contacted early this morning by the White House and they would like to retain the Mission 2013 team to devise a twenty-five year plan to dramatically reduce CO2 output in the U.S. However: It must be done in two weeks

  3. Mission CO2 Reduction USA • Implementation Consider the full spectrum of capture and sequestration methods including crop and woodland management--- Will need to depend on existing technology

  4. Mission CO2 Reduction USA STEP 1: Why should we act? • Convince the American people of the need for immediate action • Make a compelling case for CO2 and climate links • Include polar temperature increases and sea-level rise--predictions for 25, 50, and 100 years • Ocean acidification and implications

  5. Mission CO2 Reduction USA STEP 2: Size of the problem • Where are biggest point sources and potential sinks-can you develop regional plans ? • What is a reasonable goal for 25 years? Stabilize, slower increase? • Current US output of CO2 (percentage of global budget and trends)

  6. Mission CO2 Reduction USA STEP 3: Sequestration • Point source capture--power plants • Reduce fossil fuel consumption (not mining coal is an effective way to sequester CO2!) • Crop choices, yields • Ocean dumping, oil field Replenishment, saline aquifers, mineralogical reservoirs

  7. Mission CO2 Reduction USA STEP 4: Costs and Feasibility • Cost of action vs. costs of inaction? • Cost per ppm of CO2? • Feasibility--reordering of national priorities?

  8. Mission CO2 Reduction USA STEP 5: The case for inaction or Human- Induced Climate Change denial • Develop a sub-team opposed to managing CO2 and climate--useful intellectual exercise • What are the arguments for an against • Can we afford it? Is it human induced? Why worry?

  9. Mission CO2 Reduction USA STEP 6: Final Product In class presentation Friday October 23rd 30 Minutes • Team 1: 5 people selected from all teams present plan • Team 2: 8 people--one from each team to answer questions following presentation • Team 3:climate change denial: ask questions! • Remainder of class: Ask tough Questions!

  10. Mission CO2 Reduction USA • QUESTIONS ?? • GET ORGANIZED---NOW!! • We need one or two of you to come to the front of the room--right now-- and lead the organization • TWO WEEKS!!
