  2. Agenda • The Problem • Premio Asset Management Solution • Premio Asset Manager • Image Server • Update Driver Client • Things to Consider • Conclusion

  3. The Problem • How do we determine which image belongs to which system? • When replacing parts (for example, sound, video, NIC, etc.), how do we determine which driver to use? • Once we have determine which driver to use, where do we go to get the appropriate driver?

  4. Premio Asset Management Solution • Our solution consists of three major components • First, Premio Asset Manager, which is a database to keep track of system serial # / master image # and the components used in each system • Second, the Imager Server itself will hold all the master images for quick and easy download • Third, the Update Driver Client (UDC), which is a Win32 application, will automatically determine which driver is needed, and download the driver automatically

  5. Premio Asset Manager • This is a database that will key off the system serial # • Associated with each serial # is the master image # • Also, the components used for each serial # will be listed • Within the individual component field is a FTP URL for the driver

  6. Image Server • This will be an NT server running some type of enterprise disk imaging program (for example, Symantec Ghost) • All the master image will be stored here • The Imager Server itself does not have to be a high end server; just need to have a large amount of storage space (large IDE HDD will suffice)

  7. Update Driver Client • This will be a customized Win32 application, so it will be cross compatible across all Windows 9x/Me/NT/W2K/XP platform • The UDC will communicate with the Asset Manager database to determine which component is in the system • Once a component is replaced, the UDC will determine if an updated driver is needed • If a driver is required, the UDC will automatically open an FTP session to Premio’s FTP server and download the correct driver

  8. Things to Consider • What is the size of each master image? We prefer to image the base operating system and drivers only, leaving out any applications • How many image server do we need? Will every single desktop have network access to the image server? Even for different campuses? • For the UDC to work, each desktop requires FTP access to the Premio FTP server, which is OUTSIDE the network. Will this be a security problem? • GISD support techs will be responsible for updating the Asset Management database when replacing defective parts.

  9. Conclusion • Premio’s solution will simplify GISD master image tracking issue • Our UDC program will automate device driver update, so techs do not have to waste valuable time searching for the correct driver • The Imager Server will allows GISD to consolidate all their master images on a single machine • Premio Asset Manager allows GISD to track each desktop down to the component level
