College students’ learning motivation and learning performancethrough English pop songs Tsai-Ping Linda Lee (李采蘋)Providence university ,TAIWAN Tsai-Ping Linda Lee (李采蘋)Providence university ,TAIWAN • Aim • To investigate college students’ learning motivation and learning performance toward English pop songs. Research Question RQ1:Will the use of English pop songs in English teaching motivate students to learn English? RQ2:Do students’ abilities are motivated after receiving English pop songs? • Introduction • Songs are regarded as an essential teaching material in language teaching. Method Instrument Participants • Quantitative method involved in this study. • The instrument was the questionnaire ,the survey items were modified based on Chen and Chen (2009). • The questionnaire consists of 2 sections: the demographic part and fifteen survey items which related to the learning motivation and learning performance. • A total of 32 undergraduate students between sophomores to senior university students • 7 male students and 25 female ones. Results and discussion The results of student’ learning motivation The results of student’ learning motivation T-test of gender’s difference of learning motivation T-test of gender’s difference of learning motivation Discussion • Most of students enjoyed and appreciated learning English through English pop songs. • They felt their learning motivation increased after learning English pop song. • They wanted to enhance their listening ability after learning English pop songs. • Male students preferred to be motivated by English pop songs teaching. Further study • Motivation can be further analyzed to see different types of motivation, such as intrinsic motivation or extrinsic motivation. • It might be good to have pre/ post test with student’s real performance score before and after the long period English pop song instruction instead of self-report questionnaire.
